Default Major Ford/F.P.V. Supplier Shuts Down.

Hi all, im hoping (as a employee) that i can have some feedback from within the industry as to the shut down of Coghlan Russell Engineering. Anyone working for Ford, G.M.H or DELPHI on here ? Thanks.

Hi mate. Just name 1 of the 37 components yous need to finish a car. Also we are the only supplier of Machined 6 cylinder engine mounts. Thats only the tip of the iceberg.

Coghlan Russell is one of the major engineering companies that ford uses for many of their engineerd components. They have been supplying ford for over thirty years i believe. My company has done some work for coghlan Russel maintaining their property.

I reckon the director consumed many James Boags whilst he was in charge.

Ford and DELPHI put offer on the table but it wasnt good enough (ie: not what we wanted) so talks are still going on. Thats about all i can say at the moment.

Regardless of the 'real reason' for this particular company's collapse, this scenario will become more common in the next 5 years.

The writing is on the wall, as more and more components are being sourced from overseas suppliers. With the move to global platforms by Holden and perhaps Ford Australia, the small automotive suppliers days in Australia are numbered - huge manufacturers overseas (probably Asia) that get global contracts will see to that.

Its sad but true.......

Manufacturing in Australia is in real trouble, and unless smaller companies can do a LOT of overseas business to supplement the small volumes they get from their local customers they will struggle to stay afloat let alone make ANY profit.

I can see some short term resolution here (aka AJAX), but as soon as supply of components starts to flow, what do think Ford & Holden will be doing ?

Their puchasing teams will be on the next flights to China etc, to resource these parts as soon as practical (as in the case of AJAX). The further risk they see because of this tenuous situation will basically end in components being bought in from OS, I have no doubt about it.

I'm not sure how much business C&R have with Ford next year with Orion, but I hope I'm wrong with my predictions above.

It's not looking good.

I think regardless of whether C&R even had Orion business, and they stay afloat, they'll have lost it now.
