Default transmission making noise?

g'day, last night i was driving with my g/f in her VL and i noticed a strange sound when her auto was shifting into and out of first.

when she stopped the car in my driveway i got out and got her to manually change through the gears. when she shifts it into drive from park or neutral there is about a 1 second delay followed by a mechanical clanking sound.

i pass off alot of the ИИИИ that happens to her car as its age but it seems very unusaul for any vehicle to make a noise like that when changing gears..

any ideas? it sounds like its coming from underneath the car about where the trans is. havent had a thorough inspection though..
