Default Silver Cars

G'day,

Just a quick question about silver cars today my Liquid Silver AU Classic got reversed into whilst I was parked at the shops, fortunately the guy left his name and details.

How many of you have either smacked into one or have had your beloved silver car smack into because people can't see it.... :gren:

Chris

Hahaha, I ran a guy over in my liquid silver AU. But I'm pretty sure he saw me.

I had a company Tungsten VX commode, which is like a silver with a gold through it. I took to turning the lights on during the day to stop people running in to me. Awesome colour for a company car though, you only had to wash it when you couldnt see out the windows anymore, it hid the dirt that well ))

Yep people seem to think my car is invisible. Though whether it has got anything to do with the colour, I dont know.

*BTW the car is Magnetic Silver- pretty much a straight, plain silver

I had a silver fairlane with the same prob.. lots of near misses people saying they didn't notice me etc.

Guess it depends on your environment too.. around buildings etc obviously different to suburban areas.

I haven't had too many problems. Occassionally I have had someone pull out in front of me, and had to slam on the brakes. When it is getting dark, I'm usually one of the first to put my lights on... so people can see me easier. The great think about silver, it hides the dust well (important for me, because when I wash the car, it doesn't last a day before it's filthy again) and it does a great job of hiding scratches. I have plenty of scratches, but unless you look closely, the paint appears to be immaculate.

statistically Yellow is the easiest colour to see and also the least likely to be in a crash.

With some of those taxi drivers out there, I wouldn't be too sure!

There is no way Id ever buy a grey or silver car.
few years back I had a guy just change lanes into the side of me while I was driving a silver EB. His excuse, " I just didnt even see you"
Then a couple of months later I was driving along the highway in Western NSW and pulled out to pass a car when a Nissan GTR (in dark silver) just seemed to appear from nowhere and it was only quick reflexes ( on both our parts) that saved us from the mother of all head ons.
I just couldnt believe how well this thing blended into the colour of the bitumen and I firmly believe that if his car had been a bit brighter colour I would have picked him out a lot earlier.
Just my experience anyway....

I haven't had any problems in my EL fairmont yet.

But when I bought my XR6T a few years ago now it got smashed into twice in 3 months while it was parked on the road outside my house. Once because a person was drink driving and another time an old lady reversed into it.
:

The side on shot is when the lady reversed into it and the other shot is the drunk drivers effort. The car had less than 4000kms on it the first time and less than 7000kms the next time.. I stopped caring about it after this all happened sadly..

I t-boned a Magna outside the Werribee plaza in 1993. Back then I had one of those 25th anniversary XF Falcons - silver. This bloke pulled out and said he didn’t see me. I felt sorry for his wife and kids though, they were pretty shaken.

Cheers, Danny

James, Silver is one of the worst. Especially in fog where it's near impossible to see.

Red is the easiest to see.

I had a silver EL fairmont for four years and never got hit. Yet I had a Green EB Fairmont and it got hit about 8 times in one year so I sold it. After that I keep hearing stories about Green cars always getting hit.

Mind you Kermit Green seems to be seen.

I was looking at our silver camry this morning in the drive while enjoying a coffee, and thinking about this post and come upon a thought, it may or may not have any thing to do with it but i noticrd that it reflected images very similar to a mirror, i.e with the silver being very similar to mirror backing it reflrcted everything that was around it, thus if it reflects trees, roadsides etc it would be possible that even though they see the car ( it could be possible what they see are reflections of trees / road side etc ) throwing an optical illusion of no car ?

any way just a thought and perhaps i might leave the car dirty instead of a high shine ?

my 2 cents
Pete

I had a silver meteor wagon for many years, and we had NO end of trouble with people just not seeing us, especially on highways towing the camper( just like redebxr8 said). A friend we were following back from Coffs Harbour once, said he could not always see the car so he just kept an eye out for the camper, to see where we were.

Hey B2F. As a moderator, I think you need to come up with a suitable punishment for the heinous crime of owning a Camry. I know that taring and feathering is out because it breaks OH&S guidelines. The Chinese Bamboo torture won’t work here because we don’t have the climate to grow the stuff. What if we get Doc to drive his immaculate beast (XR8) to Wagga and walk around the show with a t-shirt saying I’d rather drive my Camry? :hihi:

Cheers, Danny

A work colleague had a silver car that was hit in the rear a few times and decided to never again choose that colour.

They are probably more vunverable on dull rainy days when everything seems to be grey.

I've decided that there are too many silver cars out there. So I'm more likely to go for something that stands out a little from the rest of the nation's fleet.
