Default Tire chirp

Hey there,

How many of you guys chirp at least 1st to 2nd during `enthusiastic driving'? In terms of mechanical action I would have thought tire chirping was hard on everything from the clutch to the tyre, but it seems some people even try to do it. What's the deal?

Cheers

i chirp 1st to 2nd heaps sumtimes dont even mean it (damn overpressure clutch). only thing ive noticed its hard on is if it grips and dnt chirp it tears out the engine mounts, figured it out after 3 sets of mounts in 2 months got a 4th set tearing atm

Never, I always: clutch in, throttle off, shift gear, revmatch to speed to that gear, clutch out, full throttle.

Yea I do that too (and downshift heel/toe), but it seems quite determined to chirp despite the revs being pretty much equal before/after. Might be the clutch- I think an arm or two is broken, but that shouldn't matter.

nick81xd: 4th as well? Do you back off the revs or anything?

Work cars? Hell yes! Nothing like a 4 wheel chirp going into second.

Hi everyone,

My AU2 Fairlane used to chirp between 1 and 2 with the skift kit but I had it turned down because it was too much for every day. I really miss it whend riving enthusiastically. The chirp and jolt on the neck was very exciting when kicking down also and used to give all my passengers a fright, especially when coming out of a corner.

Seeing those big old modified Statesmans do it makes me very jealous.

But one day after having it turned down I managed to do it again when manually shifting from 1 to 2, probably because I was just on redlining. Never tried that again. But I think that auto's without a shift kit just sound plain lazy to me now.

I have a question: I was doing full throttle from a stop in the wet a few weeks ago and the car gave a little wiggle from gears 1 to 2. Would it do that without a shift kit as well?

Andrew.

yeh mine does, especially now that the rear tyres are about 50% and smooth as ... makes for some 'interesting' experiences if the steering wheel is turned even about 2degs off centre.. nothing like oppy locking it when not even meaning too..

Mine will chirp worse if you let it change to second at between 3k and 4k than if you nail it all the way to 5k and change it then. (c4 with kit and more stall)

I would agree with you if that is what you are trying to do - like flatshifting and dumping the clutch to get a chirp. But if there is just a little chirp when shifting firmly it is more a case of lack of traction than jolting the drivetrain. In my case the open wheeler diff makes it nearly impossible to shift hard and fast without at least a little chirping. A hard shift that grips on a LSD equipt car with good rubber would put much more stress on the drivetrain than average 5 speed pulling a chirpy.

When I'm pushing my car it sometimes, well more than sometimes go beyond the chirp and end in wheelspin. My manualised trans shifts damn hard. 1st time I drove it, it sounded as if the **** end was going to fall out on a shift.

I've managed to chirp 10.5" slicks on the strip.

I only have 2 gears low and high or 1st and "D" depends on the way you look at it.

Answer = no, I don't do it intentionally or to impress anyone.

Andrew, you can get shift kits that you can switch on and off. HEADSEX has done it to his AU XR8. I'm not talking the power/Eco switch either!

To answer your question, you probably had a minor lock up of the rear wheels, the trans noticed it and dropped a gear causing the minor lock to be a little more agressive and kicking out the rear. I used to do it deliberately in the LTD when it was an auto..

I know about the shift kits that you wire in, and you can even adjust the harshness with a dial. I was advised to avoid these things and go for a direct adjustment in the auto box, (which included a free auto trans oil change that I need at the time!). I was told that the electronic mod would lead to more problems in the end.
