After that test drive I'd tell them I didn't want it and have they got something with better handling characteristics.

That is such a shame. A sad end to a car that deserves better treatment.

Do Ferraris get parted out? Or is that considered too vulgar?

Everything is fixable if your pockets are deep enough.

Looks absolutely fixable seen from my DIY backyard heavy panel beating 'mission impossible' past achievements.

Since the F40 is so old, I thought it would be plain fibreglass and epoxy panels, but looking at Wikipedia it says: The body was an entirely new design by Pininfarina featuring panels made of Kevlar, carbon fibre, and aluminium for strength and low weight, and intense aerodynamic testing employed. Weight was further minimised through the use of a polycarbonate plastic windshield and windows.
It can be quite tricky to do full strength repair of carbon fibre parts glued to aluminum parts, the way it is often done on supercars.

On this one, the worst damaged area seem to be around the front wheel on the Right side. Probably that tree has pushed in the frame, so it needs an absolute full strip-down, stretch-bench, new sections welded in and moulded and glued in, etc.

If you scroll down in this post, you see one that was worse, and is back on the road:
https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...rari-f40-black

Here are some more photos of F40 repairs and F40 chassis:
https://www.bing.com/images/search?q...mageBasicHover

One problem could be the parts prices.. Seems quite astronomical.

It isn't so often that super-cars come up for sale. Manheim Perth sold a Lambo Gallardo a few years ago that was 'Repairable Writeoff'. If I remember right it had a couple of wheels ripped off, but the driver's cell seemed intact. I'm sure it would have been out of my price range. Always some 'idiots' that pay more for the wrecks than they are worth.
Cheers,

My favourite mini model car is the F40. (Burago - replica amazing)

Had it since about 12.

Probably my favourite car ever.

I cant even imagine the feeling as it just was about to break lose or the conversation after.

I guess old mate will be buying it and then have to pay another $2M to fix..LOL

ROI shot on that one.

Someone has a 20km/dingle in an everyday car. Popular voice says it’s a write-off, uneconomical repair, never be the same, death trap etc etc.

Someone crashes a Fezza much harder and the debate immediately shifts to scope of repairs.

Surely that's totalled and not fixable?

Nearly every panel is ruined let alone the chassis etc.

Would be a massive patch up job surely to get it back near reasonable shape

Interesting to see what would cost more to repair, this or the XA GT Barn Find?

I read somewhere that it was the owner taking it out for a spin, had a buyer lined up to come and look at it the next day.

Agreed; more modern build, good resources for repair. I’d think they’re a long way from the “individualistic” nature of each car a few decades ago and many donor parts would be near bolt-on in terms of tweaking to fit.

Time is money. It may cost 25k Aud for a new bonnet on a the F40 compared to say 3 or 4K for a genuine Xa Gt bonnet as an example, but it may also take years to find one. On the other hand, even If there wasn’t one available for the Fez, I’m sure Ferrari would still have the original dies to press one out for it within a few months.

I've had this idea of a TV show like The Block, putting a few car builds up against each other like they do houses.
Ferrari F40 vs XA GT RPO83 sounds like the perfect launching pad

Watched Targa Tasmania with mum in 90s and we watched the Targa cars come in.

The one I wanted to see was the F40.

It didn't disappoint. Mum and I love fast cars. (Dad into Lexus comfort etc)

Chas Kelly (rich transport person but no race driver) crashed that exact amazing machine off the next day during a Targa stage.

When it is a historic super-car, I wouldn't doubt for a second that it is repairable. If I had access to buy something like that for $100k I would jump at it right away, and do most of the work myself.
Anyone that can build a street-rod, or do custom work, can also puzzle this one back to a high standard repaired vehicle again.

For example this one was rebuilt:

http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0025_large.jpg

Step 1 would be a full strip-down to about this level:

https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...x=6&ajaxhist=0

Step 2 would be to strap it down on a chassis bench, start measuring and start pulling as required, then replace any sections that are damaged:
This is also an F40 being repaired, but mostly rear end:

https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...=0&vt=0&sim=11

And before you know it, you have a fully repaired chassis with roof, and can start the fun bit of spending $$$ on new parts, for those that are not repairable

https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...=0&vt=0&sim=11

Cheers,
