Default Do you carry anything in your car to defend yourself?

In this day and age with more stories of car jacking, road rage, and drug induced crime, do you carry anything in your car (close at hand) in the event you needed to defend yourself or your family while out on the roads?

Purely for self defence of course, and in an event that warrants the use of such an item depending on the situation.

I'm not talking about carrying anything illegal such as firearms or knives or a weapon you are not licensed to carry or possess.

I'm talking about items that are not generally considered as "weapons" (although I realise that any household item, tool or object can be considered to be a weapon depending on the situation in which it is used and the force warranted to defend yourself, family or your property in each situation).

Some examples could be;

- A pointed umbrella
- A golf club
- A watchman's Maglite torch
- A large screwdriver
- A large wrench
- A tyre lever
- A tactical metal pen
- Even a bunch of keys, with a long key pointed outwards between two fingers in a clenched fist
- A small fire extinguisher

Screwdriver. Looking at the FG Falcon flip key, the worst part of me has often wondered how easy it is to turn one into a potent flick knife that would fly under the radar in most circumstances.

Nope, I carry nothing more then house keys on my person. I do drive a work car which has many things that could be considered weapons. But with today's legal system, if you assult a criminal trying to commit a crime of oportunity, you turn yourself into the criminal. As dumb as it sounds my cousin is a police prosecuter and my mum is a lawyer, and her job is to keep criminals out of gaol. The system is messed up, but in my job I work for a number of law firms and they don't even bother to hide the frequent drug use, but it's these people who tell us what to do, hence my statement of a messed up legal system.

Remember the old club steering wheel locks, they were always somewhat comforting sitting down there by your seat if it was ever required... Don't carry anything these days though, I figure a 2 tonne motorised hunk of steel is a pretty good weapon in itself!

In the case of car jackings the most obvious way to deter/prevent would be to lock the doors. Pretty much all cars now have central locking and some will even auto lock the doors once you start driving as a safety feature, and as for road rage or other related crime your probably only going to get yourself in deeper if you start trying to use items as weapons.

I agree completely.. even if the car doesnt have central locking, just push the button on the door you had to unlock. Its not rocket surgury

Transmission and accelerator are good ones. Reverse then straight over the top of them.

Pre mobile phone days I kept the wheel spanner by my seat - only had to use it once - to change a tyre - Now everybody has phones as a form of personal security.

yep drivers licence and insurance

as long as im legal im right and if they really want it well its replaceable

usually anything else carried is just work relatable

and if I wanted any more vehicle protection id have employed my ex nothing of value got out of her grasp
reminds me of a clip I once saw on the net of car security from car jacking where he pushed a button releasing the boot allowing an ape out to take care of the jacker

The club lock is probably the easiest thing to use reminds me of a story when i was younger sitting in my car with my girlfriend early hours dropping her off home a guy and his mates opened my front drivers door and told me to get out they were robbing me and taking my car i grabbed the club lock and was just about to smash it straight into his head between his eyes when he said it was just a joke and he thought i had been at the same party he had down the road. Still in a pinch it could of been a useful weapon

The problem with weapons is they're more likely to be used against you.... Rather than be a protection.

I have a 3 D cell maglite in the door pocket of both the GT and the Territory. But it's there mostly to be a torch - I suppose it could be an item to be used as a defence, but it's not that easy to get out of the pocket unless the door is open..... As someone has already posted, I have insurance, so if they really want the car, I guess it's theirs.

I play a fair bit of golf, so there is usually a club or two in the car somewhere (95% of the time in the boot). The clubs are out if I have more than a few days between rounds.

I just back a little poop out into my hand and hold that out in front of me defensively

seems to deter even the most aggressive of assailants; they mostly back away with a confused look on their face

Ps. Awesome thread, well done
