Default Car Sales Feb. 2016

http://www.caradvice.com.au/422414/f...rs-and-losers/

Top models in February 2016

The Toyota Corolla was (not atypically) the most popular vehicle in February with 3455 sales, albeit down 12.3 per cent, ahead of the Mazda 3 (3354, down 6.8 per cent). This means the top two were from the Small Car segment, despite its 4.9 per cent decline.

The Toyota HiLux (3261, up 14 per cent) and Ford Ranger (2655, up 35.9 per cent) utes filled the next two spots, ahead of the always strong Hyundai i30 (2461, up 15.8 per cent).

Rounding out the top ten were the Holden Commodore (2331, down 7.4 per cent), Mitsubishi Triton (2165, up 8.9 per cent), Mazda CX-5 (2156, up 3.4 per cent), Hyundai Tucson (1849) and Volkswagen Golf (1752, down 0.7 per cent).

The top-selling vehicle in each passenger segment was: Nissan Micra, Mazda 2, Mini, Toyota Corolla, Audi A3, Toyota Camry, BMW 3 Series (first time we’ve seen that in a while), Holden Commodore, Jaguar XF, Holden Caprice, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Kia Carnival, Mercedes-Benz Valente, Ford Mustang, BMW 4 Series and Porsche 911.

The top SUV and light commercial vehicles by segment were: Mitsubishi ASX, Audi Q3, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Toyota Prado, BMW X5, Toyota LandCruiser, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Volkswagen Caddy, Hyundai iLoad and Toyota HiLux.

Other key data

The five most popular vehicle types were small cars (19.1 per cent total market share), medium SUVs (15), large SUVs (12.3), 4Χ4 utes (12.2) and small SUVs (9.9).

The leading passenger vehicle brands were: Toyota (6763), Mazda (5610), Hyundai (4771), Holden (4152), Volkswagen (3054), Kia (2096), Ford (1930), Mercedes-Benz (1576), Honda (1385) and BMW (1279).

The leading SUV brands were Toyota (4869), Nissan (3735), Mazda (3712), Mitsubishi (3516), Subaru (2534), Hyundai (2282), Honda (1894), Ford (1696), Holden (1529) and BMW (1469)

Private (up 1.1 per cent), business (up 15.6 per cent) and government (1.9 per cent) sales all grew in February, with only rentals (down 0.6 per cent) going the other way.

Australia’s biggest sources of imports were Japan (28,138), Thailand (22,325), Korea (9699, up 4.9 per cent), Korea (11,576) and Germany (7322), all of which accounted for more sales than Australian-made (6493).

Toyota Hilux sells as many as Ranger and BT50 combined and yet when you start to travel and get amongst those towing vans and camper trailers there seems to be more Navarras, BT50's and Rangers than Hiluxes.
Are these figures including fleet sales?

Companies go work mate crazy. Without the mass 2wd sales I doubt they would be as high. Those workmates are damn near impossible to kill.

Of course they include fleet.

Ford needs to lower the price on the 4x2 ranger and make it more competitive in the cheap ute category, you see way more 4x2 hilux workmates then Ranger XL's.

I'll bet they make more money on the higher series then the low series. Thailand is running gangbusters so as long as the profits are high it means development dollars are put into new models.

Funny enough BT50 has been doing well in the 4x2 segment of late. So its interesting that it isn't selling as many.

Ranger is doing the heavy lifting. Add some Mustang, Mondeo and Falcon.

There isn't really much good news for Ford, the rest of the Ford range isn't registering (excuse the pun) on the sales radar.

"Given the fact that three of these contenders (Everest, Fortuner and Pajero Sport) all launched here within the past six months, it’s also a mini-segment that’s growing fast.

With all that said, though, it’s the old faithful of the class, the Isuzu MU-X, that remains the winner thanks to very sharp pricing. It managed 508 sales in February (up 6 per cent) and has 1003 sales this year so far.

This puts it ahead of the Pajero Sport, off to a strong start with 396 in February and accounting for 732 this year. On top of this, Mitsubishi has also sold 159 old Challengers, the Pajero Sport’s predecessor.

Close behind is the Ford Everest with 377 sales in February and 664 for year year. Close behind is the supply-restricted Toyota Fortuner with 336/610. Rounding it out is the Holden Colorado 7 with 232/511.

For context, the Toyota Prado managed a staggering 1295 sales in February, taking its yearly total to 2389. Softer options such as the Kluger (959) and Subaru Outback (869) also well and truly trounced this more rugged quintet last month, while in a higher price-segment, the BMW X5 did 451."

Yeah the Thai ute based 4wd wagons don't seem to be resonating with the public which is weird seeing the thousands and thousands of dual cabs that leave the showrooms each month.

I don't think they are nailing the showroom appeal. They all look good on paper but feel a little small and cheap in reality.

The dual cabs have heavy fleet business though and they are subject to tax concessions.

Everest beat the heavily discounted Colorado 7. Not bad for a vehicle most claim to be overpriced!

Due to less than expected sales. It is a good time to be buying an Everest though, you can pick up an Ambiente for high 40s on road which is close to $10,000 off list price.

Some are advertised 47,880 drive away which is an absolute bargain. Price was around 60k on road on release.

Agreed. Ford has had a great month in February. I know it's only one month, but if this trend continues, we'll get back up to fifth in no time, despite what the doomsayers say.

Also great to see Mondeo second only to Camry in such a massive mid size segment.

Maybe because you're out in Woop Woop?

I see more Aurions than Falcons. Does that mean Aurions are more popular?

Right, so it beat the cheaper Fortuner, but lost to the more expensive Prado. Ergo, the Everest is not expensive enough ...

NX74205.."Right, so it beat the cheaper Fortuner, but lost to the more expensive Prado. Ergo, the Everest is not expensive enough .." OK so why isnt the Everest selling ???? If its cheaper then it should be selling close to Prado sales, but its way behind???? Why????

It will be very interesting when Commodore goes.

Its currently the only large or medium sedan in the Top 10. even Camry is not there.

Ford have an opportunity with Mondeo to grab some of this - but some aggressive marketing is required

Following.

You can't convert Landcruiser owners over night.. They are funny people. Same goes with Hilux owners.

Ford doesn't push Everest, Toyota has been advertising Prado on tv week after week with special AUTO pricing.

409 cars isn't a lot of cars to cover the whole of Australia.. Do you except those 409 to all live in your suburb? I've personally seen heaps of them, so must be selling well in Sydney.

It's great that Ford have had such a positive month vs last year.. Probably the best comparsion increase they'e had in many many years

Only 97 Caprice sales, considering the 300 is the only competition it shows how much large cars are disliked by Australians these days.
It's a pitty really considering what gear they pack.

Rightly or wrongly, the majority of buyers out there these days seem to think of large cars as oversized tanks that drink too much fuel, are a PITA to park, cost too much to run in general and just isn't as practical as say an SUV or even a smaller hatchback when it comes to bootspace.
