Watch your back Mercedes-AMG CLA45 and Audi RS3 - the BMW M2 is coming.

The German luxury brand has revealed pricing and specifications for its new performance coupe, due to arrive in Australia in 2016.

Described as a spiritual successor to the iconic E30 M3, the compact coupe is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that pumps out 272kW and 500Nm.

BMW will offer two variants of the new model, the entry-level M2 Pure which comes equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox and the regular M2 which gets the company's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The M2 Pure will be priced from $89,900 plus on-road costs with the M2 starting from $98,900.

Standard performance gear for both includes the Active M differential, M compound brakes and 19-inch alloy wheels. Luxury items include Connected Drive Services, active cruise control, rear parking sensors, reversing camera, Bi-Xenon headlighs, leather upholstery, carbon fibre trim, navigation and digital radio.

Both models come equipped with BMW's active safety features including lane departure warning, pedestrian waring and autonomous braking function.

Stepping up to the M2 adds an alarm system, adaptive headlights, anti-dazzle high-beam assist, electric and heated seats and a Harman/Kardon surround sound system.

Both M2 variants will go on sale before the middle of 2016.

So much choice for performance buyers these days. I don't mind a smaller car, day to day I roll around in my F6 by myself wondering this is a big car that 90% of the time just carries me.

This would be nice with another two doors to chuck some kids in the back if need be.

1 series M making a comeback as M2. Very nice piece of kit, plenty of go, good handling and with the M performance touches and 2 snails it will be a quick all round car. The plus is its a nice looking coupe with the wide body.

Bmw lost the plot when they started using even numbers. What will they do next, switch the range to FWD and run V6 engines ?

The people buying this beamer can probably afford the car and the trip around the world without having to save money on the Focus.

Nice car and I'd love one if I was into coupe's, unfortunately my friends are too old to be able to climb through the front doors into those small rear seats.
Once there you'd need the jaws of life to get them out.

Look at all that bracing, chassis must be as stiff as a wet paper bag.

Or over engineered.

These little coupes are known for their handling ability, I'd say they are making sure she doesn't twist from all that torque which is even a better thing for the owners that will throw bigger exhausts and aftermarket tunes at them.

I can relate to that. But the thing about a BMW is that once you're in you don't really want to get out again and if you really have to, there's the X series!

BMW hasn't lost any plot. Dated interior my foot. Fantastic driver's car with a subtle nod to tradition (yet all latest tech), little touches that remind me of the better cars on the market in my youth. MB on the other hand has gone for the sterile modernity of new money. Not my taste.

This thing must really go but sadly wasted in Australia where you're lucky to have go at 0-80 before Nanny Plod appears on your tail. This is one for letting rip on a European motorway (sigh).

Kids are the ones who really appreciate these things. My missus on the other hand gets argumentative about centrifugal force

You have Zero ******* clue.
The M cars are stiff as *******. They are way over engineered and make more power than quoted.

Love it. I'd take this over the M3.

Better than just grabbing a 6 cyl Taxi and drop in a S/C V8 and flogging it off to the public.

Betting BMW also uprated things like diff bushes too, also guessing why a fully engineered car is more expensive than just "car + big engine"

I agree with everything you say. Would be interested to drive this car, but I would wait and reserve an opinion on the turbo 6 and the way power comes on and sound and if it is linear in power. But it would be a weapon.

About fully engineered, when I drove a Boxer S it was fully engineered and although fantastic, it was a bit synthesized ho hum. Safe and refined.

The FGX XR8 is under engineered in the rear and chassis, and it is a wild loose ride.

Sometimes that can be fun as well...

I spoke with a guy who purchased a Porsche turbo 4wd Carrera, and he said it was brutally fast-ie 3 secs and under to 100kph, but a bit boring and too controlled, he preferred his amg C63 black series -for this reason.

Noticeable price difference between a taxi with a supercharged V8 and a BMW M2 though.

He has decided to go for the naturally aspirated rear wheel, hoping it will be more fun than the 4wd Porsche.

That's the thing, need a little mongrel in the car to make it fun, that's why the Falcons with the rear rather raw and unsophisticated is rather quite a lot of fun...even if it is not that fast

Funny thing was although it looked nice, I am actually pretty satisfied with my FGX XR8, enough power for me to get a buzz and rush, and practical for my needs- 4 doors when I need to convey more than 2 adults, cavernous space for when I need to transport a mobile office....

That GT3RS to me looked like a fully fledged road race car (roll cage etc), which would be nice for a track day car etc- if you had a lazy $420,000 and were an easy loaded millionaire who leveraged money off others.
