Default Insurance discount for Dash Cams?

I hear that in the UK some insurance companies offer a discount for having a dash camera installed in your car. I've spoken to RACV a few times and queried it, both times they've said they currently do not offer a discount but would pass the comment forward...

Does anyone know of any Australian car insurance companies that do?

Surely the insurance company can benefit from being able to determine who is at fault a lot faster and more efficiently.

Wouldn't be surprised if they put premiums up.

Would love to see the crash rate of dash cam drivers, I'm positive it would be above average.

It's probably worth calling around 5 or 6 insurers and asking if they give a discount.

Asking your insurance for a discount for having a dash cam is a bit cheeky, that same recording could actually incriminate you in an accident.

Don't show footage if you're at fault and doing something wrong?

I find having a camera increases that sense of accountability for my actions, therefore more careful behind the wheel.

I found the same thing when people started putting "Baby on Board" stickers on their rear windows.

I'm not sure but I think it's ok to run up the **** of a vehicle without the sticker?

I think local insurers are a little slow to grasp the benefits of dashcams. Comes at no surprise as insurers are always behind in technology.

I have spoken to may companies and encouraged them to get dascams (I should be paid a commission!!) Whilst I think it will not prevent an accent, it will certainly add to clarifying liability.

These 'UBER' drivers in QLD are encouraged to have dash cam recorders because if you get in an accident and your personal insurer won't cover it, the company does so anything to clear up what happened helps.

They (insurance companies) will sell the dashcam/blackbox recorder as a way of receiving a discount but in reality they will (over 2yrs or so) put the premiums back to where they were prior to offering the discount and then slug non complying policy holders with exorbitant fees.

The Australian government is a master at using this tactic to get the masses to comply with its demands.

And yes, I am aware of how cynical I sound.

Im happy enough that my $100 dash cam might save me a $1000 excess in a situation where the other driver won't admit there mistake and no witnesses.

Took me 6 months once before to get a claim sorted because the other person refused to admit fault in a situation that could happen no other way!

What is a good dash cam, ie one that provides quality footage.

I think they would be worth while just to save confusion, as it will show what happened.

I have seen accidents were both drivers claimed to have had a green light, no witnesses, so no results or positive outcome for anyone, a dash cam would have cleared that up in a second.

Depends on your budget really. Plenty of options.

I've got a VicoVation Marcus5 which is a dual camera, one on the front and one on the rear windscreen. Good quality footage and easy to install. 1080P from both cameras.

I thought it gave them license to drive like a douche and cut people off.

.............

Doubt you'll get a discount. If you did I would then see them as standard fitment on new cars.....which is something which might sound like a good idea.

Insurance companies are there to make money just like speed cameras
they are not to give any discounts by having a dashcam.

Remember the good ole radar detector that use be in the late 80's and early 90's
a lot of people are using it and their revenue was down so they decided
to ban anyone from using it.
2 yrs later after the ban the revenue was up.

Actually 100% of vehicles with dashcams are involved in accidents or have near misses. just check out youtube for examples... you dont see videos from cars without dash cams...

I saw some idiot make a comment like that on Facebook. Said dash cam owner have more accidents because there are so many videos around. Apparently cars without dashcams don't crash as often. Don't know where is stats cane from.

never saw that, although my comment is obviously is obviously in jest.

Some of the dash cam crashes or near misses you see are the fault of the dash cam equipped driver rather than the other party as the subject makes out.

I got a no-brand hd camera (1080). It reasonably good quŕlity, but you still need to be very close to read a number plate. Since mine records sound, I just read aloud the plate of offenders.

Well yeah, people with dash cams can be idiots and can also make mistakes which causes crashes.

But I would like to think someone who goes to the effort of putting a camera in their car which watches their every move would be less likely to deliberately drive like an idiot.

It's all my crap opinion, if you need a dash cam so be it. Many professional drivers are forced to.

What I have seen on TV of dash cam is they do not tell the whole story and of what I have seen a lot is fools with the dash cam do not even try to avoid the problem at all.

If I were the insurance company I would charge such as a incompetent driver with what did you do to avoid the problem ?

Boy when I think of it, if I never ever tried to avoid others stupidity cutting you off etc.

The insurance business is very cut throat and margins are tight, which is likely why they don't hand out 'their' profits to anyone that installs a dash cam.

Also, in a lot of cases regarding video recording, if the other party says in court 'it may look like me, but it wasn't me', guess what.... Unless they hav other evidence, such as another witness, a good lawyer can throw the video out the window... Ive seen this happen in action....
