Default Chinese high beam punishment. Sounds good to me!

Chinese drivers who misuse headlights made to look at high beams for five minutes, say Shenzhen police
Updated 11 Aug 2014, 11:07amMon 11 Aug 2014, 11:07am

Using the age-old reasoning of making the punishment fit the crime, police in a sprawling Chinese metropolis are making drivers who inappropriately flash their bright lights suffer the same agony.

In a post on their official account on Sina Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter, traffic police in the southern city of Shenzhen said that violators were being made to look at bright headlights for five minutes.

The post described it as an "appropriate experience" that would make offenders "sense the harm" such use of their headlights could cause.

"From now on, traffic police will make those found carelessly using bright lights to look at them for five minutes," said the post, followed by a laughing-face emoticon.

Violators also have to listen to a police explanation on properly using headlights and pay a fine of 300 yuan ($49), the post said.

It included a photo of a man sitting on a red plastic stool looking into the bright lights of what appeared to be a police vehicle with a uniformed officer standing nearby.

Automobile use has boomed in China along with the country's rapid economic growth, which has vaulted it to become the world's second-largest economy and the globe's biggest car market.

Auto sales accelerated in July, growing 6.7 per cent to 1.62 million vehicles, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said Friday.

For the first seven months of 2014, sales reached 13.30 million vehicles, up 8.2 per cent on the same period last year, the industry group said.

China's full-year auto sales hit 21.98 million vehicles last year.

That city is a stones throw from me... I've never heard of this before. Honestly though, inappropriate use of headlights are the least of their worries!! I saw last week something on their version of ACA about people being almost cleaned up by drivers, running red lights (like 20sec after the change); drivers not stopping for pedestrians on lights and zebra crossings; people pulling out into intersections regardless of oncoming traffic; stopping in the middle of the road (dont worry about pulling over!!) to work out where you are; or my personal favourite, DRIVING THE WRONG WAY UP A STREET (cause it is more direct)!!!

In highly lit streets like we have over here (high beam) is not the top problem!!

Isn't the rule in India "Might is right" so trucks always have right of way basically. I'd hate to live in a country where the masses are only just really getting into cars, it'd be nuts!

In China at least they drive cars just like they have ride bikes or scooters (so long as it fits).

I have been told by many drivers here that "it's just the way it works here". And after living here for the past 4+ months I have come to realise is a bunch of BULL!! You can easily get around like a Western driver, and in fact traffic would go much faster if people obeyed their road rules (and pedestrian rules too).

Every single day, you see drivers "blocking by weaving in 2 lanes of traffic" to stop cars passing them, so that when everyone gets to the next set of lights they wont be near the back... Taxi drivers are insane with this strategy! Or the changing of lanes whenever... if there is a car/truck/bus/family on a scooter there already... tough, Ill go where I want.

Which is the attitude behind all the issues with cars etc here. The attitude that "I am the center of the universe" is literally killing people!

Im looking forward to getting my license here!

Nah mate, no chance... and they are LHD not RHD. Unbelievably hard to get a car the size of a Falcon with the same reliability. Closest is a BMW 5 series, but they are way more expensive and from what I have read on bimmerfest.com (forums) they are no where compared to Falcon reliability and/or cost effective for repairs.

The punishment variant might not be as nice as the ones you got caught looking at.

Might be at knee level

I always thought these clowns doing burnouts were already inhaling something or were high on smoke of some sort, or both

Unless of course they're at somewhere like Summernats where it's traditional

I wouldnt mind if we had better rules regarding headlights , high beam use as well, but stricter rules regarding height and aim, self leveling headlights wouldn't be a bad thing, uniform headlight Heights would be a step in the right direction too, a sky high 4wd pulls up behind you at the lights and your 3/4 blind by the time lights change.
