Default QLD rego number: what year?

Anyone in QLD able to help me identify roughly what year a car with rego plates "089---" would have been registered in?

I'm trying to work out roughly the last time my convertible was registered ..

Thanks ..

need the letters for year of rego
From : Wikepedia
Queensland number plates have had an unusual format since 1977, as the numbers come before the letters. The current format is nnn·aaa. Motorists have two choices of slogan: Queensland - Sunshine State in conjunction with Queensland - The Smart State. Former State Premier Peter Beattie had (up until 2007) been promoting the use the of slogan "Smart State" to describe the State Government's efforts to promote education, research and development within Queensland and in the early 2000s introduced the slogan to licence plates. However, after public ridicule (and several interstate jibes) the State Government agreed to allow vehicle owners the choice between the new slogan and the old Sunshine State slogan."Sunshine State" remains popular; few people choose "The Smart State". Queensland number plates have maroon text on a white background. Maroon is the official state colour of Queensland and is also used by the state's sporting teams. On 22 April 2012, the recently elected coalition government announced that it would stop manufacturing the " smart state" number plate as a cost cutting measure.[4]

In late May 2010, after the nnn·Maa series of plates was used up, the series skipped to nnn·Raa, due to standard-issue plates in the -Naa, -Oaa, -Paa and -Qaa series remaining in circulation. As of August 2013, the "Sunshine State" series has reached the combination THD.

Starting on 19 August 2013, QUEENSLANDER! - 8 IN A ROW slogan plates starts at 000-UAA to celebrate the recent State of Origin win.

Green and white coloured Queensland plate, as issued between 1977 and 2001
Queensland - The Sunshine State

Block series: In 1977 in green on reflective white base, beginning at 000·NAA through to 000·PZZ. In late 1987, Queensland switched to the current format of green on white plates beginning at 000·AAA. The green ink was changed to maroon at 000·GKK in late 2001. As mentioned above, two slogans are currently available in the maroon on reflective-white colour scheme: QUEENSLAND - THE SMART STATE with plates 000·HAA to 999·HFU, 000·HOY to 999·HQQ, 000·JAA to 999·JDZ and 000·JKA to 999·JKT, 000·KAA to 999·KAZ, 000·KFA to 999·KGK, 000·KOA to 999·KPD, 000·KWS to 999·KXG, 000·LFA to 999·LFU, 000·LOA to 999·LOZ, 000·LZI to 999·LZZ, 000·MAA to 999·MFM . All others have SUNSHINE STATE slogans.

The digits 089 tell you nothing about when the plate was issued.
I assume the plate is 089 XXX.
The 3 letters will tell when the plate was issued.

What are the 3 letters??

Thinking about this a bit more, we possibly took delivery of that car (136CBX) as early as 1993, so 1994 would be about right for a rego plate beginning with CS.

The letters indicate roughly the year in Qld

Agree with the above but keep in mind that any old car re registered in 1994 by being sold to a new owner etc will get the same plate as a "new" one.
New owner usually means new plates but not necessarily. A different owner can keep the old plates as well, with the consent of the original owner. So the car/plates could have had several owners over the years.
I think you can still special order the old green plates if yours are too faded get damaged etc. It is dearer than getting current series maroon plates but.

And about the only cars to wear "smart state" plates were govt vehicles.

The other thing affecting the dates is that remote transport depos were sent bulk lots of new rego plates as their stock to supply to new or re-regoed vehicles. It sometimes took a long while to get through all of these. I was out west & had to replace my faded original green & white plates & got DHB almost a year after a family member got EZZ in the city, this was late 90's.

That's because your XR8 would have been originally registered with that plate and had been continuously registered. Your Fairmont Ghia obviously had the original rego cancelled at some point and was re-registered much later.

It will only tell you when the vehicle was first registered not last, as the car could have been registered with that number for years.

My first port of call would be your local Motor Registry to obtain that information.

The HTH in 'What Car' post means "Hope That Helps". He said he had
BUT on his Fairmont.

For interest though xxx HTH came out in around 04. The Hxx and Ixx plates were issues in the same years due to Beattie bringing out the Smart
State plates which all started with Hxx. Which consumers complained, he allowed consumers to pick either a Hxx or Ixx (normal slogan) plates. So the H plates moved real slow while everyone picked Ixx plates. Around the time HFx was issued, the Smart State slogan was removed. And the rest of the Hxx plates were then issued, before continuing on with the last of the Ixx plates (or maybe the Jxx plates had already started).

You have read What Car's post incorrectly. His numberplates are correct for the time they were issued. BPX comes before BUT.

Ok .. Sounds like it last transferred ownership around 1995 ..
From reading some of the posts sounds like vehicles got new plates each owner (typically)?
I'm going to have to try and go back further in rego history than that. I'm in Vic, but I assume I can write to QLD rego and ask for details somehow?
( it's an imported vehicle and I'm trying to work out when it would have been first rego'd )

They are the "default" plates, unless you specifically tick the box asking which plates you want. Most cars registered by car lots will have the "smart state" plates. Our 2011 Triton has "Smart State" (bleh...be changing that soon), and when I registered the '82 Celica, the woman at the Transport Department pointed out to me that I hadn't ticked the box, and would get smart state ones if I didn't let them know which I preferred.

Unless it had personalize plates then it would keep the same plate on it. Or unless it was re-registered each time. But just a transfer, then it keeps the same plate.

What XBROO has said is correct.

In 1995 the plates would have started with something like CT. or CU. and then move onto the D.. plates.

Luckily my XR50 which was first registered in Oct 2011 doesn't have Smart State plates!

I think the car yards were supposed to have used Smart State plates but most didn't. That's why you never see many smart state plates.
