Default What sort of tow car should I get?

Alright guys, I have around 5-7k to spend on a car that will be both cool and fun to drive? I'm towing a s13 track car. Don't really want a 4WD, so like...utes, wagons or sedans. XF's, XD's and that sort of stuff are cool.

Opinions please!

Have seen some "rust free" XF Panelvans for sale very cheaply on eBay... or if you can afford it how about an F100 ex ambo? room to sleep, carry spares etc...

XD or XF. i'd be leaning more towards XF as i like them more. the XD isnt bad. in saying that. finding one without rust would be the hard bit. but then again they are getting old. its too be expected. they were a good car!! or you could go all out and buy an AU or BA. get an good auto with a big transmission cooler!! you'll be set!! the F100 would be an awesome tow car!! might have too pay abit more for one thou!!!

F100 or F150 slammed.

Long wheelbase tow better, short wheelbase look better.

Also they are a true 3 seater.

Yep. AU. cheap, comfy, reliable and nice to drive with enough grunt.
Also you'll have some $ left to play with so why not add some rims and pacemakers with a decent system for sound and extra poke

I use an AU wagon and also an XE ute for towing duties - the wagon when the missus comes along - the ute if it's just me. The wagon tows better unladen but the ute is better when it's loaded up.

Territory's are coming down in a price a bit. Seen a few neat examples of them dumped on big wheels. Look the goods, lay the seats down and you can sleep in there (i'm 6ft2) That's what my parents use to tow the caravan anyway.

Before the territory they used the AU sedan.

Have only heard positive things about the AU's towing abilities.

First of all you'll have to work out what the legal towing capacity of a vehicle would be. You don't want those nasty insurance companies having an easy out if you really need them.
F100s have always made brilliant tow vehicles and as someone else pointed out, LWB is better - also fit more gear in the back.
There's plenty around and if you go gas (don't believe I'm saying that with my personal hate for gas) they are cheap to run as well. They are also easy to work on.

I'm liking the F100's to be honest, they are pretty tough. I forgot to mention that I am still a P plater so will have to be 6 cylinder :(

Most likely, however OP mentioned "cool and fun to drive" - nothing about creature comforts. Buy an F100 and slowly put some money into it, bagged and all, as below...

why isnt an AU fun to drive?? the F100 is nothing more then a workhorse. unless they have a decent V8 in them and even then there not that exciting to drive. its only the look factor why they look cool

First thing you may want to do is to check if you can legally tow a trailer on your P plates. Each states has separate rules.

If you are in Vic this applies.

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...strictions.htm

P1 probationary drivers are only allowed to tow for work at the request of their employer, or for driving solely in connection with agriculture, horticulture, dairying, pastoral, commercial fishing, or under instruction with an experienced driver in the vehicle.

Never said an AU isn't fun to drive, but it isn't really 'cool'...just blends in with the other 1000s of AUs out there.

Second this , I drove an xf van for almost a decade as a work truck and it never failed to drag a huge amount of gear around , only problem was a little rust inside the roof which was an easy fix , fit a later model motor when the xflow beaks and a 5 speed would be an awsome thing

BA BF FG can tow 2300kgs legally
AU rated at 1600kgs

Seams like they would be able to tow most cars.
