Default Now there's something you don't see every day.....

Went to a show and shine in Port Lincoln last weekend and saw some ok rides, nothing that jumped out at me as outstanding or especially interesting though until I came across this scene. These are 3 locally owned and regularly driven original XR GT's. I've seen all of them around at one time or another but never realised there were 3 of them because I'd never seen more than 2 on any given day at any one time. They've all remained reg'd. since new and none are restored as far as I know or can tell, except the one on the left may have had a respray at some point, but that's not the interesting thing about them. Can you pick what it is?

That didn't take long, lol.

Ok, I don't know who owns them but I can say I've seen any 2 of them getting around town at any one time in different places with different, shall we say, "distinguished" aged drivers which suggests to me that they're all owned individually. I'd love to know the story behind how 3 blokes in the 60's all decided to buy GT's at the same time and make a point of getting them reg'd at the same time. Can you imaging the confused look on the rego clerks face when trying to process them, especially, and it is conceivable it could be so, that the cars have sequential vin numbers too!
Just think, 3 guys walk into the dealer and order 3 GT's. It's not hard to imagine 3 cars coming off the production line one after the other and being shipped to the one dealer. If that's the case those 3 cars would be a little bit more special as a group.

Probably when they were young, they thought if we all have the same car with nearly the same rego we can get out of speeding tickets cos the cops couldnt be sure who they saw flying past at 130mph!
Deny deny deny! What can they do?

I think I remember that there were a number of GTs used in cigarette promotions. These may be some of them.
I do know that the only non gold XR GTs were specially made for promos.

Triplets, thats sooo cool.

However, the one on the far right seems to have a different external mirror, the one on the left doesnt have an antenna (not that I can see anyway), and the one in the middle has black wipers?

Bushbasher, I hope you don't mind, but this shot is going to be my screensaver for a while.

Tonz, these days I actually live out Lipson way but I'm gunna guess they probably originate from one of the old fishing crews from back in the day. I'll still lay my money on separate owners though but Garveys might know the cars if they've done any work on them over the years, especially old Frank if he's still about.

Jaydee, each car is just slightly different from the next. You are right, 68 has no aerial, 67 has the black wipers and 66 does have a different mirrir as well as front and rear over riders. Come to think of it, now I'm talking differences, I'm sure I've seen one with a black vinyl roof too. There couldn't be 4 of them could there, hmmmmmm?

The detective has done his work.

All 3 are in the one family, Dad owns 2 the son one.
They are not high profile people around town, just quietly go running their jobs but with a passion for fine machinery.
I know a lot more but have been sworn to secrecy...sorry.

Most probably replaced the windscreen and it is hard (impossible even) to get a screen without the tinted band and black surrounds nowadays.

Correct.

"All of the original XR GTs were painted in the colour 'GT Gold', except for eight that were "Gallaher Silver" and another five that were "Russet Bronze, Sultan Maroon, Polar White, Avis White and Ivy Green". The non-gold GTs, while having the same specifications, are the rarest of the early Australian muscle cars".

Re issued plates is a new one on me, I wasn't aware or that. My interesting pic is becoming less interesting by the day, lol. Most of the intrigue is being peeled away with boring old FACTS. I was only half right about different owners, and that was all in the family, the rego now looks like not being the original regos from back in the day and they aren't from a fishing crew. Gee, I'll have to be a bit more careful next time I shoot from the hip, haha. Even the potential fourth one I thought I saw with the vinyl roof is a bust, I saw it yesterday and yes it's gold and yes it's got the black vinyl roof but no it's not a fourth, it is in fact an XT.

I'll get back in me box now........
