Default Training with Royce Gracie

Was lucky enough to be asked to attend a training session with Royce Gracie on saturday. Royce whose UFC record is 51 and 1 is the undisputed champ. Probably the highlight of my martial arts training so far. The bloke is an expert at what he does and the things he showed us were easy and effective. A funny guy who ads bits of humor to the proceedings as he is testing how far your arm will go before snapping.
The Q&A at the end mainly involved his pro career he is 6'1" and 80kg his biggest opponent to date was 6' 10" 220kg he reckons the best fighters are the best strategists not the biggest or hardest hitters fights are won with your head he says.

Looking foreward to teaching my students some interesting stuff at training this week for me it was different to what I normally do but in martial arts there is so much to learn and you will never know it all.
IMHO the pressure point training that I teach is the most useful tool in todays society you dont need to be strong just know where to find them apply the technique and the attacker is yours makes it great training for women and for the ones that will report you to the police on assault charges for the most part leaves no marks cant even see where you have been.

All the years I have spent training it has become almost a way of life yet never really had to use excessive force at all outside of training funny it gives you a sense of peace and what is worth fighting for and when to leave well enough alone or maybe its how to avoid confrontation as master Chong Chul Rhee told me when you decide the only way is to fight make sure to do what ever it takes.

A great opportunity to see one the best in action.
The Gracie/Sakuraba rivalry produced some of my favourite all time matches.

the atmosphere is great at those events as i have attended a couple of UFC events in London and manchester. however, i honestly believe watching it at home on pay per view is better. Especially when tickets to get close to the cage are around $1000 a pop........

Royce considers the early UFC was the best as with everything else the US boxing fraternity weighed in and created rules, weight divisions, gloves etc in the old days it was the best of the best no weight limits no rounds no padding and no rules now you can only fight opponents in your weight division not necessarily the best V's the best.
Good news is he has not retired yet.

They need to allow Fedor to fight in the UFC and not impose sanctions on him (ie no particpation in Samba tournaments etc etc)

We need more Fedor fights....on that note, such a shame Mirko Crocop floundered in the UFC. He was awesome to watch in Pride.

FPV I hate you so much right now....

You mentioned Master Chong Chul Rhee, have you trained in Rhee TKD? Master Rhee graded me to my 1st degree black belt afew years ago. An amazing, soft spoken man who has an amazing way of getting the best out of anyone, no matter what their experience

Like so many I started at RTKD and was a branch instructor for about 6years after 10 years there wanted to learn more so I went to Shim Jang taught for 2 years a big let down the techniques were ordinary and if you paid anyone could get a black belt not like the flogging you got at Old school Rhee I'm sure you remember the bruising.... LOL.... Now a 3rd Dan under the ITF banner I can run my own show and do a lot of MMA with a decidedly TKD slant, recently training with SAS instructors (they are the fittest people I have ever met) and that's how I got the invite to train with Royce.
All arts IMHO on there own are incomplete you dont have to master them all but gain an understanding of what each is and take the good bits and add to your knowledge.

Like I said he is a funny guy and gave us all a lot of knowledge in our time with him.

Awesome, I would have loved to attend something like that.
I missed an opportunity to attend the Inosanto Revolution Tour 2009 over xmas due to lack of funds, but I'm making sure I get there this year.

The club I train at is hosting Erik Paulson for a seminar tonight, which I cant wait for.
The training tips and techniques will be invaluable I'm sure.

It's great to get the opportunity to train with someone of such notoriety and ability.

There was a Gracie school in may area and my Sensei had a friend attending that school and he came and taught us some techniques to add to our training. You can certainly tell who has trained well in that style compared to someone that is learning. Of course it is like that in any style.

I also got to attend a seminar at our dojo with Joe Lewis. I believe he has 10 Champion titles including World Heavyweight Karate Champion, United States Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion, and others.

It was about 1997 and he was about 54 years old. He was still perfectly fit and solid.

He was going to demonstrate how to take a kick to the ribs and remove the power from the kick. Since I was the only one with shin and instep pads on he chose me to kick him in the ribs with a roundhouse in-step kick. I thought he just wanted a demonstration so I only tapped his ribs. He held his arm up exposing his side. He said "No, KICK me." So I thought light contact, so I snapped a quick kick out and made more contact and pulled it back. He told me I kicked like his grandmother. KICK HIM!!

I wailed on his ribs with 6 kicks so hard I would easily have been breaking multiple boards.........then he said "Ok, hold up."

Then he turned to everyone and started explaining how he would exhale and crunch on the side the kick was coming on.....as if nothing just happened!!

Then he turned to me and said "Ok, my turn."

I went white. He was going to kill me.

......"Just kidding", he said.

.........THANK GOD!!!!

One of the Nogueira's is doing an MMA seminar @ Bulldog Gym in Parramatta (Sydney) on the 28th. Should be good to check out.

Anyone here going to see the UFC on Sunday? Got my tix can't wait. OneHD is airing the event (which I reckon I'll watch as well coz the commentary is interesting).

i'd love to watch it, but network 10 decided that the NT isn't large enough to warrant broadcasting One here. And our toothless government won't do anything to coax them to do so

Where do you train? I have mates who do Krav Maga and BJJ they might like to get some sessions with you.
