I've recently placed an Amp and Sub in my Series 1 AU. I've been getting Engine Hum from my car as I drive and as I rev the car higher, pitch of the hum gets higher. I bought a Noise Filter for it, but I don't know where or how to mount it. I've been told it can go to either the alternator, or the ignition coil, but still, I have no idea.
Has anyone done this in the past and are you able to collaborate on it? Does anyone have pictures of how to do it and where exactly to mount it? Cheers. |

You need to mount it as close to the source of the hum as you can. The hum is actually a feedback loop, so I'd be looking to ensure the earth wire you fitted, and where you fitted it to, is right first. I fitted a noise suppressor to an AU1 for a cheap amp I had, and the thing caused the heater fan to be on all the time!

I would be looking for the source of the hum. A few questions:
are you using the standard ford head or is it after market ? Are you wiring the amp using the speaker wires or pre amp outputs from the head ? Where have you mounted the amp ? |

BillC means the factory Ford headunit/cd player.
I would recommend heavier ground cable for a start... what gauge wire are you using for the amp? |

Try disconnecting the pre amp leads from the amp. Is the hum still there ? If it is then the hum will be coming from either the main power lead or the earth.. If thats the case try what ayeyou said and get a heavier lead and try a different earthing point. If that makes no difference try picking up a differnt point for the power lead. Directly off the battery is the best point. If neither of these make any difference then hook up the noise filter directly to the amp. there are usually three leads. I earth, one power and one switch. Same as your amp. hooks up to the same points.
If the signal is coming from your pre amp leads it may be a faulty head unit. plug back in the pre amp leads to your amp and then disconnect the leads from directly behing your head unit. If the noise stops then its definately a fault with your head unit. If the noise is still their try running the leads a different route. |

Any ideas on the basic cost for a car joint to look into it? Would WOW Sight & Sound deal with this sort of issue?
