Default engine not running hot

1987 LTD - 6 cylinder EFI. problem - engine does not get hot. radiator seems 'cold'. this is an issue as heater pumps out no heat. have replaced hoses and thermostat. what can cause an engine to run cool like this?

You changed the thermostat and still cold? What thermostat did you put in? It has to start opening at 80C and be fully open by about 85C.

How long has the engine been running before you turn the heater on? Grab both radiator hoses after a longish drive. They should be quite warm to the touch, even hot. If they are still cold, your thermostat is either opening at too low a temperature or stuck open (happens with new ones once ina while).

Does your engine feel very hot to the touch??? If it does there is a blockage in the radiator system. Get it fixed quick!

thanks for the replies. its not my car its a friends. i think you have put us on the right track. the engine block does not get very hot. its like its a cold engine. quite weird. :

My money is on a stuck thermostat. Thermostats are temperamental little bastards and it's not unheard of for a brand new one to stick.

A good thing to do is to get the thermostat out and boil it in water on the stove to ensure that it opens.

Ignore the following if you've already done this or know about it:

Make sure you bleed the air out of the head/thermostat area with the bleeder screw.
They get an airlock that can be terminal.
Make sure the heater is turned on when filling/bleeding, etc.
