Ford Prefect 100e - Anyone know about them? - Page 2

As a kid in Liverpool UK in the 60's dad had many cars, a neighbour had the 100E and it was tiny, we were pretty poor like most others and dad turned up one day with a 1952 I think Prefect Saloon, what a beauty that was, took all of us to Cornwall camping one year, Mum, Dad, Granny, one new baby girl and 4 boys under 12 yrs old, and we all fitted in, it was a magically slow drive, got to Somerset and the muffler blew up, it was like a bomb going off, he gave us boys a can of beans and said eat em, we did, he cut tin in and wired a patch over hole, and bought an exhaust bandage and off we went!

Made it too, and back to Liverpool, she was a mighty car, little side valve engine dident miss a beat!

I know nothing about them except that my parents had one as a family car when I was little, they used to carry themselves and us 4 kids in one, me being the youngest used to sit on my mum's knee. Dad sold/traded it for a FB Holden station wagon

They seemed to be popular in NZ. those and the Austin A30 were common as first cars

My first car ( 1953 Defect ute) had been around Riverina rough unmade roads for 3 years before I bought it from dealer who had done a rough job on welding up the cracks in front and rear crossmembers where transverse spring bolted on. The welds soon cracked and for some time corners were taken on the door handles almost ! It did good service for 2 years after new crossmembers went in until on one fast journey back to my home town , skidded to a halt with engine locked up ( though I did ease the problem declutching ). A valve had broken off , with a short length of stem and been pushed up on top of the piston punching a neat hole in the head and deforming piston , bending con rod. Local mechanic did fantastic job , tapped the hole in head threading in a plug , straightened the rod and fitted a used piston. The other shortcoming was gearbox , would always jump out of 2nd on over run , the usual mod was a jam tin tied to dashboard with wire which you could pop over the end of the gear stick as required. It did not put me off Fords , have had 7 new ones starting with the best looking one of the lot , a late XK.

Thats interesting as my dad sold his Ford Consul to buy an EK Holden station wagon.

My mum did her drivers licence in a 1961 Ford 'Popular' 100E, back in them days (UK) the instructor had no problem with me and my younger brother sitting in the back seat as long as we remained quiet.

But how did you remain quiet without an Ipad or some other device to take up your attention?

If you failed to grasp the implication of the initial warning/stern look from mum, then a slap up the side of the head to one of us usually reinforced the instruction....it didn't happen often at all
