If any body has been to Piha Beach. northwest of Auckland.

I used to laugh at the amount of cars with Burning brakes (smoking) arriving in the carpark.
I don't know of any stretch of road that's harder on them

years back when I was in Europe we used to test the cars up and down the Gross Glockner mountain pass in Austria. It's on a tourist route and the road is only open for half of the year, but the garage we were based at made enough money selling brake pads and clutches in that six months that he didn't need to work for the rest of the year anyway. No kidding but his recovery truck was in constant use for 12 hours a day.

One of the problem is the way the brakes are applied on a downhill run. A lot of drivers ride the pedal all the way down so the brakes never have a chance to cool, the heat keeps building. A better way is to use the brakes is in a "on-off" manner, brake release, brake release, etc. not every second or two, more let it run up 10-15ks, knock off 10-15ks, run up 10-15ks, knock off 10-15ks etc. It's a seat of the pants thing, 10-15ks is just an example.
Yes it's true you do have to brake harder but there is that time when there is no fiction and the brakes are cooling. How often do you see a race car with red hot discs and as soon as the brakes are released the glowing stops.
Left foot braking in autos does not help either, resting the foot on the brake pedal dragging the brakes all the time. How often have you been following some one and the brake lights are on all the time or flicker with every bump.

Absolutely nothing wrong with engine breaking. As mentioned already, the ZF does this automatically when on a steepish descent and breaking, it'll shift down to a lower gear to assist with maintaining a slower speed.

Obviously it is to ASSIST with braking, not negate the need for the brake.

If it's so bad to use gears to slow down, why do they design them this way.

I sometimes wonder who really knows the facts and who makes **** up
