Oil is bought at world market prices. So even if 100% oil is drilled out of OZ (someone told me that we need arab oil because it's a better grade, but I'm not sure if that was just BS), it would still cost the 50 odd dollers a litre.

How much tax is there on US petrol??

There is a pretty hefty tax on our fuel... I think something like 0.34 USD per gallon just for the state and about 0.24 for the federal government. So over 0.50 per gallon here. But with our prices hovering around $2.60/gallon, about $2 of every gallon goes to the oil companies who are gouging us as bad as they are you! So I think... they're getting us for 0.77aud per 3.78 litres.

There needs to be an easy way to do these conversions because I know you don't know what I'm talking about.

You've got to remember that the population in the States is near the 300 million compared to our 21 million,so they can afford to get their Petrol cheaper.
