Hi all.Am wondering if anyone knows what the new rules are,that have apparantly come in for putting rims and tyres on light comericals in Queensland.Was a drafted act for sometime,and was pending to go to government,but is apparantly thru.one of the apprenctices had there usual pull ups with the fuzz,last weekend,and was told that the new rules were in place.still got done for the tyres,but the rims were ok?
Can anyone shed some light on this??is it a 10% plus rule on your placard as was suggested by qld transport last year. |

if you have a 1 tonne ute, you need to have load rated tyres on it.
i know ive had trouble finding decent tyres to fit my RTV. im not sure what the laws are width wise but.

The simple rule is that you have to have rims and tyres that meet or exceed the load rating supplied on the correct tyre placard for your vehicle. No you can not place a tyre placard from a lesser rated vehicle on either.

The guidelines have changed, although its still near impossible to put big wheels on 2wd light commercials. The 10% idea is a good one but to find a tyre in the right size with a high enough load to cover this is'nt easy.
When the rules first came out just after Xmas I went through all of my suppliers to find something and could'nt. Technically 16's are as big as you can go.

Have a read of the Guideline for the installation of alternative tyres, rims and wheels to Light Goods Vehicles in Queensland on QTs website.
Basically if you are going to use a passenger car tyre as opposed to a light commercial tyre you will need to fit a tyre that has a load rating (by mass not the load rating number) that is 110% of the manufacturer's. From the guideline..."The Tyre and Rim Standards Manual of the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia requires, for light goods vehicles when fitted with passenger car tyres, the selection of the correct tyre to be based on the highest individual wheel load multiplied by a service factor of 1.10."
