EF Belt tensioners bearings ?!?!

can the bearings in the idler pulleys on the tensioner be replaced or do you have to replace the whole tensioner. One of mine has become very squelly and it's annoying the crap out of me. Just hoping I don't have to replace the whole tensioner.

ull probly find its wear in the tensioner puller wear the bearing is. u may be able to replace them but not sure if the pully would break before the bearing comes out, a press would be the only way to get it out too id say

Thanks for the offer Jason, but I don't have a new bearing and i'm broke and won't be attending tommorrow. Can you tell me the trick, and do I need a press to replace it ?

yes you need a press to do it you also need a die grinder to release outer lip

its not that easy i would get secondhand one to tie you over

then when we get a chance ill show you how to do it

Cheap Solution

Take pulleys off the idler
Carefully flick out the bearing covers with a sharp knife
Clean properly and repack with grease, replace covers
Flip pulley over 180 degrees when reinstalling on idler as one edge of the pulley is usually less worn from the belt than the other especially when car has a few kms up.

I do this every 30000kms on taxis, pulleys last for about 200000km normally which is when you have to replace idler anyway and when you buy it from Ford (about $120 I think) you get 2 new pulleys

A dearer solution and needing more tools is to press out bearing from pulley, go to bearing store and get new bearing for $5 or so. Can also get metal pulleys from bearing stores, these tend to last a bit better I have found as they deal with heat better than plastic, about $30 to $40 from memory.
