Default Licenced driver sitting next to the learner

Tonight driving home, I came up to a very erratic learner driver, who was going slow, speeding up, changing into the wrong lane and then going back, mostly driving in the right hand lane.

When I finally could pass (on the left), I noticed the licenced driver sitting in the passenger seat was a VERY old lady (80 or 90 years) wearing a scarf over her head, who could hardly see over the dashboard. I wondered how long it was since she drove last. 10 years? 20 years? Did she still have a current licence?

I am one who thinks that learners should have as much practice as possible in driving, BUT the licenced driver should be a driver of a certain standard to be able to pass knowledge and techniques on to the learner.

I understand that they are learning to drive but some people are just plain bloody woefull at driving.

There are certain things that some people just can not do safely and driving is included.

As unsafe as it might be if you are fully licenced and not intoxicated you are allowed to supervise a Learner.

Pretty laughable when some of these "supervisors" can't drive much better themselves.

It's true the superviser has to have had their opens for a year yeah?
What if i took a trip NSW with my QLD L's, would i be able to drive with someone
from NSW who had only had their opens for less then a year?

I'm not sure but I think you'll find the one year rule is OZ wide.

My old driving school instructure got fired from the job for being crap then got and job as a tester!

back on topic, I do agree their should be certain brackets that the supervisor should fit into.

Here in WA you must of had a full unrestricted liscence for more than 4 years consecutively, meaning no suspensions or cancellations

Even if it isnt Aus wide as MO suggested, you would still be on a Qld Learner licence subject to the standard Qld restrictions of holding that licence.

An accident waiting to happen.

I do agree with that a driver should be of a certain standard in order to drive with/teach a learner driver. I also think there should be regular testing of ones driving, not when they're 70 odd plus, but from middle age or even younger. I'm not aware if testing is mandatory or really exists, but reading about this elderly person is just deplorable. I think that seeing such a thing needs to be reported.

Mine fell asleep while driving with me :. Goes to show how good my driving is ;). I was never there for instruction in the first place, more so just to get my competencies stamped.

i have been getting lessons in a manual (havent converted mine yet lol) and we went to pick some guy up. omg, i swear i was praying like no tomorrow. the instructor had to keep reaching over for the wheel. the guy was lookin down at the shifter everytime he shifted, he ran up on the gutter numerous times. he wasnt invited back lol.

but i also saw something the other night. a vk ss was in front of me at the lights, and a learner in a vn ss pulled up beside him. of course, the guy in vk started teasin the learner, who replied with a few revs. as the lights went green they both took off for a drag. now last time i checked, learner plus drag dont = safe lol

not defending the commo driver, but it is also possible he forgot to remove the L's or turn them back around to P's and was not actually a learner. It is illegal however to display L's or P's if you are fully licenced driver, but if you do have a P displayed you have to abide by the P-plate rules.

some silly rules along those lines.

I saw the Exact opposite learner (Same as 1tufel's situation almost) on my way home yesterday

He was racing around, changing lanes quickly, just being a grade A hoon
the "instructior" didnt look over 18 either

Tried racing me aswell...

Oh and what was he Driving? a VN with neons HAHA

But yeah imagine how this guy will be driving when he gets his P's?, i couldnt make out his rego cause he had those crappy old faded green/white (victoria garden state) ones and was long gone before i even had a chance to look

hmmmm i hate to be hypicritical jus being a p plater myself and only jsut being of my L's less that 12months ago but L platers shouldnt drive during peak hr traffic untill they are on their logbook in my opinion, i know its hard to police but what if their were diferent colored l plates for phase 1 and 2.

yeah but not so soonn pk hr traffic can be a nightmare im not saying they shouldnt drive there, but atleast learn how 2 use a clutch and change gears confidently first toherwise thats when theres holdups and accidents, and very frustrated drivers around them.

I see what mUTHA is trying to say - you don't go out into heavy peak hour traffic on your first day, you wait until you are competent/confident with the basic skills first. Got to crawl before you walk

Quick one for ya guys.. I have my full VIC licence.. Got it last month.. Can i supervise a NSW L-plater?? I sort of offered my car for practise without realising there was supervisor rules..

In nsw to be a supervisor you have to have your full drivers license there is no waiting period in nsw... roosta you would be fine to take nsw learner in nsw
