Default VIN Numbers - what do they mean

I have searched for this everywhere including all the various forums and I haven't been able to locate anything that explains what each of the characters in the VIN number represent. I know it has been covered at least in part before but I just can't find it.

For example, my VIN is - 6FPAAAJGSWWB71213

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

6FP = car manufacturer's prefix = Ford Australia
AAA = unused
J = product source code (country of origin)
G = assembly plant = Broadmeadows
SW = body style code = Fairmont Ghia Sedan (also = Fairmont Sedan = XR Sedan = Futura Sedan = Forte Sedan)
W = year of production
B = month of production
71213 = serial number (sequential)

That's all I know.

The above post is fact, this post is (very confident) theory:

To expand the manufacturer's prefix further..

6 = country code = Australia
F = manufacturer = Ford
P = ?

SW would stand for Short Wheelbase because other options are..

LW = Long Wheelbase = Fairlane Ghia = LTD
WA = WAgon = Fairmont Wagon = Futura Wagon = Forte Wagon
CM = CoMmercial = XR Ute = XL Ute = XLS Ute

AAA unused or not allocated a meaning to that part of the VIN code yet

Old thread, I realize, but I do have an old (2006) BF ute!

Referring to the 12th digit in Australian VINs, it seems it does NOT represent the build month.

The VicRoads website checker at

https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/regi...18ad7b29f7741b

allows, unlike other states, searches on either Rego or VIN.

Here is the VicRoads checker data for the following Victorian Ford utes currently advertised for sale:

Build Date VIN 12th Digit

03/2005 6FPAAAJGCM5M39993 M

07/2014 6FPAAAJGCMEM67459 M

04/2010 6FPAAAJGCMAT27166 T

11/2012 6FPAAAJGCMCT20560 T

Perhaps the 12th digit is a check letter. If so, does anyone know the algorithm for its determination?

Thanks to Chairman Russ, who explained Oz Ford VIN digits 11 & 12 way back in 2006. Since 1965, Month Codes change every year. He has tabulated them all at:

Thanks Russ!
