Talking still asking for information about a whining el diff

I guess there arn't so many experts out there when it comes to knowing about diffs in el's ,further info is the car has only done 150k and the noise is intermittent i.e. adrive from melb to geelong it has no noise until you slow down coming into glong then it sounds like the diff is about to fall out.If you then stop for about the time it takes to get macdonalds the noise is gone for another while, we have put conditioner(morey-haig)in it that worked for a while .How about some educated guesses then! regards Bill

Does the noise vary depending on throttle?
Does it get louder on cruise or over-run (backing off throttle)?
Any vibrations?

this is what ive been taught about diffs.
Noise only on either accel or decell is a loose pinion
Noise that doesnt change on cornering but gets louder as you spped up is the pinion bearing
Noise that is fairly center to the car and gets louder as ya speed up and gets louder again when you turn in 1 direction only is a carrier bearing of the opposite side u were turning
a noise off to a side thats get louder when turning in the opposite direction of the side of the noise is the axle bearing one the noisy side
A clunk when egaging gears is backlash excess / not enough back lash can cause a whining due to poor contact of the teeth
Excess runout in the crownwheel can cause a whoo whoo whoo noise

If it gets noisy then goes quiet once ya stop for a bit try checkin / changin ya oil it may be thinning out too much with the heat causing the teeth to not be properly lubed. good luck with it

thanks guys for your input the biggest problem is that he noise is not always there.By the time you get to the diff specialist,it's gone and refuses to surface again no matter what diagnostic test they do.We have tried most everything you guys have come up with, and we have now decided to remove and econdition the thing.(it's one of those mechanical things EB6 would know all about,it's a pain in the a---e.)Regards Bill
