Hydrogen Falcon

A clean and mean hydrogen-powered Falcon XR6 Turbo is being developed as part of a joint project between Ford AU and the Uni of Melb.
A study, which recently received a $1.2million boost in funding from the Vic government, will start in July and aims to demonstrate the characteristics and benefits of hydrogen assisted internal combustion engines. The move follows in the footsteps of Mazda and BMW, which have pioneered the use of hydrogen in combustion engines as a viable solution to eliminating exhaust emissions.
The first stage of the project is to develop, build and test a hydrogen-fuelled XR6 Turbo engine using advanced technology such as Hydrogen Assisted Jet Ignition (HAJI).
The joint study is part of Ford AU's partnership with the Uni of Melb and the Vic government, which in 2006 formed the Advanced Centre for Automotive Research Technology (ACART).
ACART is designed to further enhance the local automotive development community, and will eventually include a new engine dynometer facility, diesel emissions test cell and a world-class environmental wind tunnel.
It's not the first time the Australian motor industry has explored hybrid technology, Holden and the CSIRO paved the way with it's hybrid eCommodore almost a decade ago.

Now devise this with the base and V8 engines and voila! you got a earth friendly brand!

Where does this hydrogen come from? Water? Just add electricity. And where does this electricity come from? Power stations? Which ones? Coal or nuclear? For every joule you extract in this car how many are used to create it?

it would still be usefull when oil becomes short in supply. but i agree alot of these things may directly help the enviroment but indirectly its just as bad.

thats why things like E-gas falcons, Ethanol 85 powered F Series are some the best environmental savers on the market imo. All the other technologies need a lot of development before they can really be called eco friendly for the entire life of the car, rather than just using less petrol in the part of its life between sale and scrapping. Also the egas and E85 have little to no impact on the useability and flexibility of the car, coz the fuel is available everywhere, no long periods of charging etc.

If they can workout how to efficiently get the hydrogen then thats the real hurdle i think, that and making it available in servos

I saw a tv show a few weeks back looking into hydrogen cars, it showed the prototypes being used etc. and the guy had a machine at his house that produced the hydrogen, so the only place he could get it was at home (good-bye long drives) and it took about a day to get 1 tank of hydrogen if i remember correctly

A Purdue University engineer has developed a method that uses an aluminium alloy to extract hydrogen from water for running fuel cells or internal combustion engines, and the technique could be used to replace petrol.
