About The Film.

SNAKE AND MONGOOSE

Synopsis

Based upon the inspirational true story of the extraordinary friendship between the greatest rivals in drag racing history, International Motorsports Hall of Fame legend, Don (“the Snake”) Prudhomme and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame legend, Tom (“the Mongoose”) McEwen, Snake and Mongoose tells the tale of their incredible race to stardom following their revolutionary sponsorship deal with Mattel’s new Hot Wheels division. The deal put Hot Wheels on the map, brought drag racing into the mainstream and changed sports marketing forever! But the story goes beyond that to their loves, losses, and how the two helped each other survive and thrive by using humor, intelligence and teamwork to help them both achieve their dreams.

In nature, the snake and mongoose are the deadliest of enemies – genetically encoded to eternally fight to the death without mercy. Beginning in the 1960s, the nature of that dynamic was strategically applied to the historic rivalry between Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwen in the most unlikely of venues – a “minor” sport struggling for attention on dusty drag racing tracks across the country. There, Prudhomme, the Snake and McEwen, the Mongoose, did, in fact, compete aggressively for dominance in the nascent sport of drag racing. Racing aficianados probably know that much of the story by now.

But what if that rivalry spawned something more than victories and defeat? What if Snake and Mongoose were quietly the closest of friends even as their rivalry intensified? What if they shared the joy and pain of life when they were not busy competing? What if their mutual respect, racing nerve, thirst for fame and fortune, and their desire to advance their thrilling, but extremely dangerous, sport brought them together as something more than mere rivals? What if a perfect storm of conditions transformed their competition into something greater – a blood kinship that enabled them to team up in order to revolutionize an entire industry?

There is no need to wonder “what if” because that’s what really happened when the two real-life Southern California drag racing legends were setting tracks on fire during those glory years. Until now, few people outside the racing community knew the true and full story of the Snake and the Mongoose. With the release of the independent film “Snake and Mongoose” from British director, Wayne Holloway, and production partners, Entertainment Universe, Rhino Films and The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), that all changes.

The film documents the full texture of their real-life relationship in all its colorful permutations- the rivalry, the races, the fights, the victories, their partnership and business success, and their support of one another during tragedies. But it was their courage off the track that helped Snake and Mongoose revolutionize the sport of drag racing and the entire world of sports marketing. In 1969, these young racers got up the courage to walk into toy giant, Mattel and pitch a cross-promotion, sponsorship deal between them and Mattel’s then new Hot Wheels Division. The money that flowed to Snake and Mongoose enabled them to race for a living, and make the cars both faster and safer. The cache that a family-friendly toy company like Mattel brought to the sport of drag racing put the sport on the map and enabled Hot Wheels to grow into a giant money maker.

Snake and Mongoose were on par with the rock stars of their generation! But that did not insulate them from the pain of a failed marriage, the loneliness of life on the road, the accidents that took friends, injured others and traumatized them, or the tragic illness of a child. The film “Snake and Mongoose” probes these many layers of their enduring 50 year relationship on a big stage platform for the first time and it does so with expertly beautifully restored archival footage so fans are seeing the real races embedded seamlessly into the feature film footage by Richard Halsey, the Academy Award winning editor of ROCKY

Really enjoyed this Movie, great blend of old original footage blended in with the acted out parts. Learnt a few things about 60s & 70s drag racing. Having the local Drag cars on display and a great turn out of Customs, Rods and Classics made it even better, 5 Stars from me!
If your going get there at least an hour before to take in the cars that roll up. Cheers, Dave
Adelaide is tonight.
