Exclamation Easter hit: petrol prices set to soar

Easter hit: petrol prices set to soar
CHRIS ZAPPONE
March 31, 2010 - 7:49AM

Petrol prices are set to soar ahead of the Easter weekend, even though experts says there is no reason they should rise.

Petrol prices, which are already at 17-month highs, are likely to jump another 10 per cent as the holiday approaches, industry analysts warn.

Poll: Should petrol prices be more closely monitored?

Based on data from petrol-price monitoring service Motor Mouth, that would take the average per-litre price to about $1.39 in Melbourne and roughly the same in Sydney. Country prices are likely to be even higher.

"I would anticipate the price cycle is going to jump on Thursday so if you leave it till Thursday afternoon you’re probably going to get caught," said MotorMouth spokesperson Sean Rennick.

In Brisbane at the moment, the average price for a litre of unleaded is $1.279 and in Perth it is $1.247 - and they are also likely to climb by between 8 and 10 per cent over the next two days.

Those rises will come despite a drop in the wholesale petrol price, which has fallen about 2 cents a litre in the past fortnight, also from a 17-month high, CommSec economist Savanth Sebastian said.

"We believe that it should mean motorists see cheaper petrol."

He said there was no reason petrol prices at the bowser should remain high given all the factors that determine the price had resulted in a fall in the wholesale price.

If petrol prices at the pump don't fall, he said, “you have the right to start asking questions from more companies and they would certainly have a case to answer for.”

Mr Rennick said fuel prices were subject to a weekly price cycle.

“Fuel prices in the capital cities normally jump on Thursday or Friday with the weekly fuel price cycle, so don't expect it to be any different this week," Mr Rennick said.

However, the Easter weekend could force retailers to push prices up sooner.

“The increase could come earlier this week because of the holidays,” said RACV general manager of public policy Brian Negus.

That would also mean the low point kicked in earlier, he said.

Blatant profiteering and proof the government has absolutely no balls or is lining pockets under the table. Brisbane $1.27, Toowoomba $1.18?? Where is the logic?

Just like Easter its self then. Look at the price of Easter eggs per gram, a freaking joke. Go buy a big block of Cadbury chocolate (on sale at the moment) and play some cricket in the backyard. Problem fixed. Everyone knows the best time to go on holiday is during school, waiting until Easter holidays is stupid from a financial point of view (I know some people can't always jump up and leave when they want). The price of EVERYTHING goes up, motels, theme parks, pizza....

I certainly won't be going anywhere over easter. Bloody hectic enough as it is. The amount of morons i see between orange and bathurst is astounding. Big suprise this year for people though. We got ourselves 6 or 7 new bikes. And they love hiding in the scrub. A lotta people are gonna cop it around here (excuse the pun lol)

Did nothing out here except go up to the high price in the avo instead of late evening. Also went up less then it did last week. Will see on Monday what the price should be.

Hadn't gone up here as of 7:30 last night when I filled up, but I had to travel to the coast yesterday arv and it was $133.9 for e10 91 near bris, had to put a few litres of united e10 98 in at $1.45 or something on the way back, got back to Toowoomba and filled up on Ultimate for $135.9... I just love the way it's cheaper up here than in Brisbane... Even with all the associated transport costs... Price gouging down there much? :

my local servo today was only selling Premium Unleaded as apparently they had "run out" of normal unleaded (yeah right!) so eveyone who filled up at that servo was paying $1.45 (Shell)..

I would have gone up the road but i was driving the mrs car and she was dead on empty..

Although i dont see how these "enquiries into petrol price fixing" keep coming up with "no outcome"... the petrol companies are just paying people off..

My friends husband works on and oil rig and he says the amount of money these companies throw at people (e.g to stop worksafe accidents getting reported etc) is unbelievable! "hush money"

Yup, that's one good thing about T-Bar. Put Ultimate in mine yesterday and noticed the price was the same as it was the night before. Was amazed at the price of petrol in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba must have some of the cheapest fuel?

Yeah, usually seems to be about the best. I drive to Brisbane/ Gold Coast fairly regularly and the BP at Gatton is either a few cents less than Toowoomba, or more likely a few cents more, then when you hit Blacksoil the two BP's are marginally dearer (10 - 15cents) and the Southside of Brissy seems to be the cheapest from my experience... It's fairly obvious that shenanigans abound, yet the government can never seem to find anything untoward... Bunch of crap, blind Freddy could see that the whole industry is &$#@*'d... S'pose I chouldn't complain too much though seeing as I'm on a good wicket :

Paid 149.9 per litre for BP Ultimate on friday, bloody joke it is, usually sits around 143.9 but they jumped the price twice in the past 2 weeks. Also BP was selling 91 for 136.9 and shell on the other side of town for 131.9 i think it was.

Greedy scumbags taking advantage of a family occasion.

Seriously how is this not illegal? It's basically theft, we have to buy it.
Can't believe there's no control on this, they have no reason to raise prices, it's not like fuel cost more to suck up from the ground on easter weekend.

One day I hope they all die.

Update from Brisbane, filled up on the cheap day which is usually Wednesday at $1.369, Thursday it was $1.379 (had to fill up again) and today Saturday, dearest day of the week, it was $1.369. Its usually $1.489 on saturday in the weekly cycle, so much for the price rises, lol.

Not really. Look at it as peak and off peak. You pay more on certain days for hotel accommodation, you pay more during the holidays for flights. Public transport costs more at certain times, etc etc etc. During off peak times you pay less.

In both instances, you are generally getting the SAME level of product and service aren't you?

Supply and demand. This is not new information. Beat them at their own game, fill up on the 'cheap' days, take that jerry can you may have in the garage along and fill that too. Ride out the peak time and when things go back to normal fill up again.

No one forces you to buy it on a certain day at a certain price.
