Unrealistic with that sort of money. Its close but you probably need a couple more grand atleast. And for a well looked after example your looking around the 9k - 10k area.

Stick a "EL Fairmont wanted private pay cash" advert in the cars for sale section of your local rag - most people trading in their car will scan the classifieds to get an idea of what trade-in figure they'll get and if they see you can offer ca$h they may figure its better than the lousy trade-in figure they normally get. Costs little but you never know your luck in a big city.

I just bought an EF Fairmont in Syd yesterday. It was a hectic day down paramatta road, but worth it.

I bought a EF Fairmont in great condition for 4200, over the day I also looked at a 98' EL Fairmont, perfect duco, wanting 5000 (A steal!), but then engine was had half the power it should, and had a wierd idle. (It might have just been timing, or a sticky injector, but who knows). But still, a EL Fairmont for 5000, even with a dead engine is a good buy (Just whack another one in for 700...)

But I didn't have 700 extra, and I had a trip home that was 400km, so I didn't want a dodgy engine..

Be careful, look at all the fairmonts around before you buy, I drove down para road 4 times (And it's a slow >female dog< of a road, that's about 10km long... As we all know :P) before lunch, and only saw 2 cars, the white EL, and a red thing with dents and marks all over it. Then I went to a private sale at Kellyville, and the duco on it was even worse. Dents, scratches, a half finished sound system and 6x9s hanging from 6" holes. - I was disapointed. but I rang 2 dealers, one of which had three fairmonts, and I found an amazingly clean EF

It's got 260,000 on the clock, but full logbooks. And it was driven by a country guy by the looks of it (Who else has custom mudflags with big *** "FORD" written on em? And bits ofhay through the boot? :P)

There's a _lot_ of crap on paramatta road, or in most used car dealers. But there are some really good buys out there

I know a Dude who bought an EL Fairmont for 4.5 thousand at an auction but had to spent another 1-2 thousand on getting it road worthy. You're best to look at car sales sites such as... www.carsales.com.au & www.drive.com.au

Good luck.

You'll never find an EF Fairmont or XR6 in decent condition for $5K. An excellent example would probably go for somewhere around the $11K mark. Personally i would stay away from the auctions and anything that prevented you from driving the thing or from getting it inspected. Keep in mind you're in the market for a 10+ year old car thats more than likely to have already had 2 maybe 3 owners, clocked up a decent amount of kays (my Fairmont hardly moves and i'm up to 160K!) and probably had some sort of major repairs done to it - be it a head gasket or some panel beating/respraying.

The only thing i would suggest is to take your time, see as many cars as you can and try to buy one from someone respectable and not likely to have thrashed the brains out of thing... i would rather buy something from an old man over something a P plater has been cruising around in for the past 5 years. When you've found the car you're after get it inspected PROPERLY - bring someone who will check the car through thoroughly from top to bottom. My mate has his wrx inspected and they even tested the thickness of the paint to see whether anything was touched up or repaired.. only cost him $200 or so. I can get details from him if youd like to use the same guys.

Good Luck!
