Default Porsche 911 Turbo v. V8 Supercar

Sydney Morning Herald Drive Section has a story on a Porsche 911 Turbo pitted against a Holden V8 Super Car on the 1/4 mile and on the race track.

The stock standard 911 Turbo did the 1/4 in 11.2secs :

The V8 S/C did it in 11.8 secs.

I was astounded, great read...

Kind of makes the HSV and FPV offerings very lame indeed..

I don't think that HSV or FPV are lame. You get what you pay for don't you.
What is a new 911 turbo worth, $300,000?

Not really. I bet the typical HSV, or FPV costs ALOT less than a 911 Turbo.

Thats not really that terrible, a V8SC cost $400/450K to r&d and build, a porsche turbo cost $360k to buy, alot more if they only made a couple, so similar in price.
but then again, a v8 is lighter and more powerful with racing slicks and everything designed to go fast, so idk

I'm not sure money or category of car comes into it. The V8 S/C and stock standard 911 turbo are not in the same league either : :

The comparison is a bit of tongue in cheek just like my FPV and HSV comment.

A bit of fun....remember that....probably not!

I can see Stefans point. The fact that a V8 supercar is slower than a street legal 911 turbo is interesting to say the least. Just a humble Beetle road car ;)

Yes the article also points out the Porsche can be driven to work every day in traffic, putter around town using 10L/100kms, with a nice radio AC leather trim, yet hose anything to legal speeds and beyond.

I'm sure your 11.2 required some sticky tires a bit of a burn-out.......30 years ago your car might have pulled a 16 second pass so it seems a fair bit has been achieved in 30 years

Well the Porsche is light, nimble and powerful - of course it is fast. Although I'd like to see it challenge a V8SC around a track for 50 laps flat out.....

TerminatorS built by CAT600 can do that, and it ran a 10.7 with full interior climate control etc. but that was with the old motor, picked up 60kw since then.

That said, I doubt it could sustain laps against the souped up volksy let alone a supercar. but I might be wrong there.

What makes you think 50 laps gives advantage to the Supercar ?
I know where my $$ would be on and with a certain steerer called J Richards.

Thanks for heads up Stefan mad comparo !

The Porsche did Phillip Island in 1.46.9 the V8 S/C did it 1.36.07. Fabian Coultard drove both and thought the slick tyres on the race car were worth about 5 sec a lap.

The Porsche is only quicker to about 200km/h then the V8 over takes.

Another part of the story says the only Holden parts the V8 S/C has in common with a road car is the bonnet, part of the roof, front doors and the rear screen. The Fords are no different. The race cars even have a shorter wheel base with 100mm taken out of the rear doors!!

Might be a lot closer than you think.
Have a look at the lap times of the porsche cup cars, within a second or 2 of the V8SC's, these are a less powerful than the turbo, but built as a road legal race car. What would they do with the turbos HP?

The Porche cup cars are very fast but still a few seconds a lap slower than a V8SC...
Over 50 laps the V8SC could probably come close to lapping a Porche cup car twice on most circuits....

When you realise the crap tyres the V8 supercars have to run, then you might understand ;). Remember they are a control tyre and the design is 10-15 years old.
I bet the tyres on the 911 isnt a 15 year old design....

Oh and the V8 supercar is pulling 10-15mph extra speed at the end of the quarter too.

Pretty sure Wheels mag got a V8 Supercar into the 10s a little while back too

Certainly tounge in cheek comparison.
Just shows how good the 997 911 Turbo really is.
It'd be my daily driver if I was ever in the market for such a beast.

Really keen to see the updated GT2 come out.

Around a track I think with the setup dialled in on the GT3 cup car it would be quicker on every part of the track except the straight against the road going turbo. 911 turbo is AWD and would take off nicely in the quarter mile drag. The V8SC would be somewhat harder to get moving.

With the journos 1 second off the times the 888 guys were capable of in their Falcons - you'd think it was the guys from Motor magazine driving.

i would have thought the v8sc is not optimly set up for 1/4 mile gearing etc, remember the 2 door falcon/cobra bathurst cars , in a race mag at the time they did the qaurter in 12 odd seconds, the holden bathurst car of that era was about the same.

The V8 Supercar was running slicks, the 911 had its normal tyres on.

In the article they believed the slicks were worth 5 seconds a lap.

While the V8 Supercar was slower to the first corner, it was a whopping 10 seconds per lap quicker than the 911.

Still, unbelievable piece of machinery that 911 Turbo.

Im glad this topic came about, as im interested in buying a standard 911, turbo costs too much, unless there is a cheaper one around. Second hand offcourse, anyone has any pros and cons about these cars?

Looking from around 2004+, found a nice targa one with the glass roof, standard motor though... Do they go well?
