Default Turbo Reliability??

A friend of mine is looking at buying a 1.4 Litre Turbo Cruze early next year.

The only thing concerning him is the reliability and durability of the Turbo.

I know this is a Ford Forum but you guys have much more experience with Turbos then the Holden guys.

Can anybody who has an XR6 Turbo advise if there have been any issues with the Turbos and does it require anything done in the services done the track.

The Cruze only has a very small Turbo so I am gathering in this day and age there should be no issues with the Turbo.

The advice you will get is generic advice. I don't see how the owner of an XR6 will shed any light on the reliability of a Cruze turbo, unless they were involved in the R & D for the motor.

Service it correctly, as per the log book. Make sure it is done on time or sooner.

Get anything investigated by the dealer ASAP if you suspect a problem. Check for leaks, check fluid levels on a regular basis. Much like you would do any other car.

Many tens of millioins if not hundreds of millions of dollars of development would have gone into that engine and turbo combo.

Look after your car well, and it should give you many years of trouble free motoring. Turbo or non turbo ;)

If it's a diesel ?? Which I assume it is..
I doubt you'll have issues..

Nearly every diesel now is turbocharged due to emissions..
Diesel engines have cooler exhaust temps compared to petrol engines..
Just keep it serviced especially if you do short trips..
Good oil and filter's...

Might have issues with it in about 20 years. Why do people think turbo cars will break easily? If you started modding the thing then you might get dramas but standard it would be quite reliable.

think you will find there is a low boost Petrol version being released next year when they start making them in Aus, its a complete unknown as it would be a new engine but as with most things mechanical, look after it and do preemptive servicing and it should have a long life.

everything turbo nowadays its only going to be at 50% of potential capacity, as they have to warrent drive train/engine and other misc components, so longevity is the key to best practice there.

Dont know why people are so concerned with long term reliability when most people only keep cars for a few years.
Theres no reason why it wont last as long as any other car if looked after.
It would go under the same rigerous testing as a normally aspirated vehicle.

And if you are looking at long term reliability, take the Cruze off the shopping list........

Actually I have spoken to quite a few Cruze owners and other than the usual complaint of the petrol version being underpowered(which the 1.4T may fix) they have all been very happy with the car.

A huge number of Captiva buyers thought the same thing, now they're getting rid of them in droves due to issue after issue. After all they're both rebadged Daewoo's made in the same place......and most people don't realise it! And Daewoo's have never had a good reputation for longevity.

Stick a Lion badge on a dog t*rd and the "sheep" will buy it......

yes TP I agree, but the captiva issues aren’t in the cruise so cant be compared, just a side note the interior was all designed in-house in Australia and as of feb/march next year our cruize’s will be made here in Australia as well.

I wouldn’t buy one... just saying

When you say made, are these IKEA jobs? IE: Comming in from korea, thailand or china in a flat pack and some monkey with an allen key is putting them together or are they being made like a commadore or falcon is made in Australia?

think you will find the engine is MADE in Australia on the production line already or if not its definitely tooled up currently for it, when I say made I mean as much as you can build a car they are coming down the production line and assembled by aussies and couple that with Australian made engine its about as aussie made as the commodore.

I do believe they canned the Family 2 engine, its just the Rattletec they make at Fishermans Bend.

However I don;t think its a CKD assembly operation so in essence it will be Australian made.

Hi Guys,
Sorry if I am hijacking but I have a related question on turbos.
Planning to get a small turbo diesel, either a focus or cruze, however it will be the wifes car and won't get driven often or much. Typically much less than 10,000 k's /yr. This means short runs where the turbo won't get up to temp. Is this likely to affect the life of the turbo?

The turbo itself will be fine on short-sh trips...
Heck semi's do over a million klrs on them...

Diesels dont like short trips as they soot up, and will clog the particulate filter.

spot on ,which then causes a whole lot of other issues
due to extra initial cost and extra service costs on diesels they dont make sense unless you do more then 30000k's per year

Um my comment on turbo's and short trips was in context to a petrol engine..
Yes semi's are diesel .. I was referring to there durability...

My Mrs drives a WRX to work the last 10 years and it's a 15min each way drive..
The engine AND turbo with 185,000 klrs are still going fine !!!

I stand corrected.

I was of the impression they got the go ahead for the new I4T's but my info is about 6 months old so i may be out of the loop.

I do know they are starting to ramp up for cruize production starting mid march 11' from all know sources? if anyone has fresh info id be interested to hear.

despite it having a holden badge, i do believe its good for workers at fishermans bend to have shifts added not taken away from them.

OT petrol turbos dont suffer heat soak as much as the 80's cars and with the R&D done nowadays with hot/cold weather testing and over 10000000 km's in pre production, id be surprised if they started to fall apart in 2-3 years, from all accounts apart from underpowered I haven't heard too much bad news regarding them.

The cruze production should bring back two shifts, while it wont really add any new jobs it will bring back full pay for the workers there (as they were on the one week on and one week off BS).

It self cleans once the filter gets hot enough, if you only do 2-3min trips to shops and back, it doesnt get that opportunity.
