How does the tip work? Never been there...

I've got a bunch of plastic garbage bags filled with paper plates, coles bags, scraps, and used drink bottles. Picnic type stuff. All mixed, no idea what is in what bag.
90% recyclable though I think. Too much to fit in the weekly bin.

I plan to load the trailer or boot up and head to the dump.
How's it all generally work?


Do I drive to the gate, pay an entry fee, then drive to some allocated area and throw the trash onto a pile myself?
What's the go there?

The website is the most confusing website i've ever seen.

IT says a bootload of 'mixed waste' is $18 or whatnot, but doesn't say what mixed waste is...


Then has a list of 50+ things they accept such as rims, fridges, tables...
Things for free, things not, blablabla..
Things they don't accept, and so on.
It has no mention of if they specifically take "household general garbage".
I assume they would, but the whole thing is just confusing af.

I don't have a proper trash service here in the country so need to take my own for the meantime to the dump you see...
I'm looking at the Melton Victoria tip mainly as that's really the only one I know of within an hour of driving without a quick google.

At least try and separate your recycling. Hard plastics from soft.
But I'm guessing it's all got food scraps mixed in if it's picnic stuff.
Then unfortunately it will be mixed waste going into land fill.
I take all my soft plastic back to Coles about every fortnight, separate my 10 cent containers for a local charity, hard clean plastic in recycle bin.
But I know if you're in the country it's a bit harder, they usually don't do recycling.

When you go to the gate, they will usually ask what you have. Tell them recycle-able items, they'll have a quick look and direct you to an area to place them in. (Large skip bins is what they use here.) done and usually free if its within your council area.

They won't accept recycle-able stuff in plastic bags though.
If it rubbish, they will charge around $20-$28 per cubic metre.

So the black garbage bags I have are filled with 3-4 coles bags each containing used paper plates, plastic bottles, etc.
Will they accept this for landfill? or would I have to burn it, etc.


I'm having issues with the clown at JJRichards with his overcharging and price rising BS so had the service stopped apparently, did have a 240L bin that worked ok, but was way too expensive. Finding new solution now, the dump was first thought.

There will often be a category of “household garbage” or “putrescible matter”. As it goes straight to landfill, its rates are high.

Recyclables are often free or low cost on the mainland east coast - even in rural areas.

As the catchphrase was, “Sort and Save”…

Simple, if you believe it is recycle-able waste inside the bags, cut them open and empty the contents into the area/bin provided.
If you don't want to cut them open, they are household garbage and you will pay for it.

Since I signed with them they changed price without consent 4-5 times (within 2 years).
Service started at 18 bucks a pickup then ended at $30.

Apparently they do this to a lot of people and the ACCC ruled their contract terms unfair, and void.

So it depends on who runs the tip. Pretty sure most councils privatised them a long time ago. Last tip run i did for domestic waste it was minimum charge $60 and 360 per tonne. So they weigh your car on the way in, give you a slip, weigh you on the way out and charge accordingly. Recycling is free, dunno how they guage that with a mixed load.
A regular domestic tip where the council garbos go wont take building material. At my old work i did a lot of tip runs with building materials and had to go to a bingo place where theyd take the skip bins. That was more expensive, but i wasnt paying.
Hot tip. Do not do a tip run when its raining or the day or 2 after rain. The tip doesnt smell pleasant when its dry, even the indoor ones. When it gets muddy, its even more unpleasant.

Ive done full loads of straight cardboard and they wave you through, never done a mixed load.
In my council you get 2 free council cleanups per year. You have to call them in. Theres the rules of what you can and cannot put out and its x square meters of stuff. For chemicals and paint etc, twice a year the council has a drop off day to take them to and dispose of.
So in that regard the council isnt too bad.

Yeah ours is a bit simpler than that,The local tip,which doesn’t accept big lots of building materials because is really a drop off centre.But their fees are either a boot load $15 Ute or small trailer $23.If it fits on the ute,same $23 fee.Mattresses$15 extra.We get 3 passes per year,but they don’t restrict me to my own 3 If I do a tip run for someone else I use their pass.so I might do 25 loads per year using passes but paying extra for mattresses.Should have said the tip that charges by weight is the main centre for the North region

At those prices I'd be sorting the crap out and putting it slowly through your normal bins, then its free.

If you don't sort it and get the recyclables out you'll be paying through the nose.

Last time I took a high sided 6 x 4 trailer load to Werribee tip it was $90 and the same at Sunshine tip was $110. That was at least 10 years ago now.

You'd think when your getting ****ed that hard you'd at least get a reach around included, but nope. Not in this case.

Seems its only gotten tons more expensive.

I remember going to the Sunshine tip and the bloke next to me had a caged 6 x 4 full of metals he was tossing into the pit. He actually paid a hefty sum to dump recycling and they just picked it up and put it in the metals bin. I did the right thing after he was done and told him he could have taken it to a metal recycler and they would have paid him for it. Probably $150 to $200 worth.

Insanely lucky here. We have a gated 6 x 4 trailer, capacity is about 2.6m3. Green waste is entirely free. General waste is $40 these days, used to be $15 a couple of years back, at the capacity of the trailer.
