Default Will Ford export the Diesel Terry and Ecoboost Falcon to Thailand?

The 50% tax placed on vehicles over 3 Litres surely would not apply now that Territory has a 2.7Litre Diesel and Falcon has a 2.0 Litre I4T right?

For vehicles below 3.0 litres, there's still a 20% tax....
Hmm, that would then make Terry a PPV like competitors vehicles sold there...

Can't help but feel like it's an agreement that only benefits one side?

What happened to free trade agreements.

How is it that they impose a 50% import duty on automotive imports, whilst Thai automotive products imported attract a 5% duty not 50%.

To me its simple. You charge us 50% we charge you 50%. Conversely we charge 5% you charge 5%. How hard could it be??

As Ford mentioned just as FTA was signed and before it came into power,
Thailand did the dirty and introduced these taxes. Not happy Jan.

I agree with Elks. It's ridiculous that we have Free Trade Agreements with these countries, yet they apply tariffs/taxes to imports from OZ, but we allow everything in with open arms.
I just wish Ford would export to more countries other than just NZ.

Bingo! So many of those calling for less Australian manufacturing support conveniently forget the setups and trade deals other governments overseas have in favour of their manufacturers. Free Market Capitalism it aint. Imagine if it were an 80% tariff on our iron ore...

I've always thought this to be a fair and reasonable method of levelling the playing field. It could also be called the Reciprical Automotive Tax, or RAT for short. I think its appropriate as that's what Thailand did to us, they Ratted on our free trade agreement.

Having said that I hope that Juliar waits until at least April to apply it as I haven't got my new Ranger yet!

This might be a silly question but how can they apply an import tax when there is a free trade agreement in place?

They applied a sales tax on Vehicles against their engine sizes. We could do the same thing here very easily, same way the Victorian State Government implimented the mandatory stability control laws 12 months infront of the rest of Australia.

You know, the Luxury Car Tax in Australia is pretty much the same thing - a non Tariff tax. You could argue that most of the high-priced cars are imports rather than local - although Territory Ghia and FPV do get hit. (Does G6ET just scrape under - or does it get hit too?).

Falcon would still be a niche product over there. The roads are too narrow. Same with India its too big for India. Be cool if they did a decontented XL spec sedan (no carpets) with 2.0 engine ( ecoboost sans turbo) to replace Nissan Cedric and Toyota Comfort cabs throughout Asia... or is all forward thinking and initiative out of the equation with FoA?

Back when FTA was signed with Thailand, Aussie Import Tariff was 10% but has since dropped to 5%...

Who says its too big? Been to Thailand lately? And I don't mean Phuket or one of the other tourist hotspots.
I live in Bangkok... right now, today, as i type this on my iphone.
Big cars are popular. Plenty of BMW 7 series cars on the road here and Mercs. Toyota Camry is a big seller here too... and it's not a small car anymore either! I reckon the latest Camry is as big as a Falcon. 4x4's are big business here too.
Remember, Thailand now has a car industry that rivals Detroit. The Government here just wants to protect the local industry and they are proud of it.

If you ask me, the problem isn't other countries, it's Australia. Too many do-gooders and suck-holes in Government who are more interested in giving stuff away to other countries in the name of 'foreign relations' that we don't take care of our own industries.

I posted this in another thread which was Ford's official response to a fed goverment request for submissions on FTA's:
http://www.pc.gov.au/__data/assets/p...944/sub051.pdf

Thailand introduced new levies after the FTA was signed but before it was to actually commence. Interestingly another competitors vehicle with "almost the same characteristics to the Territory" was classified differently and hence at a lower rate.

So right, ther's a perception that Asian countrise wouldn't buy Territory
yet before the Thai tax was imposed, Ford was gearing up to export there.

I'd say test the market in all the RHD countries in FAPA with Diesel Territory and why not give
the Ecoboost Falcon a go too, the result could be another 500 a month for each, every bit counts...

Well, it would go well if the price could be kept down. If there are any other non-tariff taxes into Thailand, above the 5% we levy on imports into Australia, then the price gets less and less attractive.

As soon as they try to do it again, Thailand will introduce some other BS tax. Something like- 50% sales tax on vehicles with 2.7 litre V6 diesel engines, touch screen, 32 storage compartments and oval shaped badges.

I say eye for an eye, if the government want to get past having to give the automotive industry money they get behind them and give them a level playing field instead of letting other countries bend us over. Our government is absolutely p 55weak.

Agree fully with you BossXR8. A lot of asian countries have these "special" taxes. Sth Korea it is a health tax to any non agricultural vehicl imported, Vietnam have one, I think it is based around safety the list goes on.

Also agree 100% , and this goes for all industries ...why Australia isn't in massive surplus is beyond me ,we give aid to countries that don't need it and can't be buggered looking after ourselves ....and that will be the end of aus it it don't grow some serious nuts , and stop licking the rest of the worlds feet .
