Default Your first car??

OK, ladies and gents.

At the risk of starting a thread that has been around before (I can't find it by searching if it has)...

What was your first car? When? How much? God or Dog? Favourite story - good or bad?

Mine was a 1972 MkI 2dr Escort. Truly exceptional condition (to look at).

My old man helped me buy it from a car yard for something like a grand in the mid 90's. I thought it was totally cool at the time - if you squinted you could pretend it was a Mexico rally car. It was white with off-centre, blue GT stripes, some nice alloys, sports exhaust.

She never missed a beat until I burnt a hole in one of its pistons on a 600km summer road trip in outback WA after I had it for just on year. She was all of a sudden smoking like a bastard with 100km to go (and no roadhouses to stop at). I found out what was wrong by nearly knocking my mate's head off when I blew the dipstick into the nextdoor neighbour's yard trying to start it after I got it home. Lifting the head confirmed the bad news.

Sold it. Still wish I had it.

1968 Xt fairmont when I was 14,bought it for $140 on the road,it was of the stepfathers mates, and he was going to sell it to me with 12 months rego (it still had a month left)for $500,but decided to deduct the price of the rego ($360 at the time).Wasn't a bad old car,221 4speed.But I sold it within a few weeks for $600 to another mate.
Wish I hadn't,would like to have it now.

I've still got my first car. A 1989 AT2 TX5 Ghia 2.2 EFI. 5sp Manual. I got it when I was about 15 and now I'm 19. It had 220000 kms on it when I got it and now has 257000 kms on it so that's only 37000 kms on it in about 4 or so years. It has served me well but will be let go sometime soon. I would love to convert it to J Spec but it would cost me a lot unfortunately. It has never has broken down on me. I'll enjoy it while I still have it.

Well, I like to consider the 1995 Ford Econovan Maxi I learnt to drive on as my first car. Technically never owned it though... but it was "mine," so to speak.

First car I've owned 100% in my name would be the '91 Nissan Pintara I own now. Mechanically fine, and generally fine. A tad thirsty for a 2.0 4cyl though.

My first car was a 1990 R31 Skyline GXE.

Came pretty much as you see there, I lowered it and gave it extractors. However, it was an absolute dog, the thing cost me close to $10k (including purchasing it) in the 1.5 years that i owned it with constant things going wrong like injector hoses blowing, busted radiator/coolant piping, dead steering rack, dead suspension, killed a tailshaft, worked-when-it-wanted fuel pump, seized air con motor, dead mufflers, 2 dead airflow meters, and that's just what i can remember off the top of my head! Was a bit sad to see it go, as it was my first love, but as the new owner drove off down the street and pulled into a driveway (gently) to turn around, it crunched down on it's front wheel (dodgy inner wheel arch), and from that moment, i was quite happy to see it go.

In hindsight, I was young and naive, blinded by CD player/17in rims/spoiler. Went on to buy the most grandpa spec ED Fairmont i could find (even had a nudge bar!), and OMG it is an absolute pleasure to own, almost 1 year on and it has never let me down. Well, i lie, i rooted the brake rotors (and maybe the diff, odd grinding occasionally) at heathcote, but I have only myself to blame for that one : This is the car i should of had as my first car, I think the ED will be with me for a long time yet, and has definitely made my blood run blue ;)

I bought a r31 series 3 svd gts2 sillouhette 109/200 (they where all red with white wheels)when I was 18.
I had a gxe for 3 months before I saw the gts in a local caryard, stock as a rock one older owner 5 speed,I loved it,one of the best cars I've had.Definatly the best handling car that I've had,but it was also magnetised to hard objects, and discustingly expensive to fix ,try $1600 for a front bar and I replaced 3 in 2 years.
I gave it an absalute hiding as only an 18 yo male with a fast red car can,and it kept coming back for more,I replaced the diff, but it hadn't been done when I bought it and they're like ea headgaskets,it's a case of when not if.
If I ever see it for sale I will buy it back,no question.I test drove an auto one last year, but not the same.Give me mine back.

1993 Ford Falcon ED Futura Classic
cost me 10g, cruise control, A/C, CD player, ford mags and new tyres, 1t tow pack, new suspension and only 100.000km. It was polynasian green (that green flip flop colour that goes into blueish purpilish depending on the light - i love that colour), very clean interior, no chips and one of those ugly grandma style rear window luvre.

It was a great first car, plenty of grunt, yet not enugh to kill myself. Compared to my mates cars it was pretty good, except my mates ИИИ VR commodore kept beating me damnit. Funnily enough he broke down more often than me, coz i never did !!!

I loved the long distance trips with, trip out bush to mt isa, even dirt roads and gawd knows what else wer egreat fun, handled great on dirt, cairns, and everywhere else i could go. It was a typical cruiser, nothing flash just comfortable.

However being bitten by the mod bug, I traded her in about a year later for an AU, which was the time the current shape. This is now 5 years ago, never looked back.

Over the years I bought a handful of other cars as 2nd cars for racing, drifting stupid ИИИИ or just daily driving when teh AU was off the road. That included an EA S-pack manhual, which i gutted for the drags, an XE 351c project car, EF Taxi, with new engine, N12 drift pulsar (seriously it did! - well maybe handbrake power oversteer - ok?) and now i am still hanging onto my Subaru Libert GX Turbo AWD :lookedat:

apolloxbgt - Dont get me wrong, R31's are a good car. I loved the SVD silo's, I almost went and bought a GTS1 (White Ser2 Silhouette with white wheels for those that dont know), but it was too much money for what condition it was in. The R31's are great cars, the sound of an RB30 (especially the bark of an SVD example) is enough to raise hairs on the back of your neck. I unfortunately bought a dud that had been flogged by it's past owners (Had 267,000 on the clock when i sold it, the way it rattled you'd swear it had double that), and i just wanted to upgrade to something newer with parts that were a lot cheaper to get, as well as something a bit more relaxed on the highway. I feel sorry for whoever owns a ser3, the price of front bars and rear hotplate lights is ridiculous, if you can find them to begin with.

Good ol Datto 120y for me. I gave it an absolute flogging and bought another one for $100 just to rip things of when they broke on the main car. I lived in the bush and used to take the thing over jumps and it still keeped going.

The first car I ever bought was an XB Coupe, All Black with a Tunnel Rammed 351 clevo, my dad and a few mates helped me build it. It was my everyday car and the Cops loved it, Hehe. It didn't go down to well as they had only just changed to those damn red "P" plates and the Power to Weight laws. But now when I look back it was a pretty cool car.

1984/85 JD Camira.

Absolute POS. Blew hoses left, right and centre. I don't think there was a time where I drove it and it didn't stop on me.

Sold it to my brother whose mate wrote it off about 3 months later.

1971 Mini Clubman, bought from a friends parents in 1980 for $700 when i was 16, kept it for 12 mths or so, (driving up and down the drive and around the back yard soon got boring!) the temptation to go further was getting too hard to resist, and you can only polish a car so many times! Sold it to an older lady who lived nearby for $2.300, used to see it quite often over the next few years, the lady told me once that she just loved her little .......... can't remember what she called it.

1977 toyota corolla paddock basher, paid $150 for it when i was about 13/14, had it for a couple of months then sold it for $250, thought it was 5 spd when i got it as it had a 5spd knob on it, but found out it wasnt, ran like a dream, body was pretty good, it really taught me how to really handle a car, gave it a floggn, but thats what i brought it for. Ive still got the receipt 5 years later.

69 HT Holden bought it in 1987. 186 Engine with a Powerglide trans. Everything in the car was shot. Every seal on the engine leaked oil. Couldn't get up hills fom a standing start. Just had to get a run up. If the tank was any more than about 3/4 full, the petrol when going around the corner would leak out around the cap, so i always had that petrol stain down the side of the car. The filler cap was low on that model car. Mum and Dad bought this for me as a first car for $900. Mum won the money at the Adelaide Casino on the keno, so thought that it could go to good use with my first car. I sold it to the brother inlaw about a year later. Dad wanted $1,500 for the car. I repalced all the seals in the engine, did some tidy up and got it presentable. Got $1,100 for it in the end. Brother inlaw was a shearer. So it used to do a lot of country roads. Oneday he hit a kangaroo side on. You could see the impression of the roo from side on along the left side of the car. :

I sold the HT to upgrade it a HX Sandman PanelVan. 308 4 speed. Yeah baby :

I was lucky enough to have a good paying job when i bought my first car, it was a brand new AU forte, not much now, but back then 99' it was a cool car.
I think i paid around, gee i cant remember actually. $30,000 or something,

I put a body kit on it, and some wheels, and i still have it. I ALMOST like the look of it more than my new car. :hihi:

I have a few good stories, but i think i would be banned if i posted them here

cheers

1981 XD Falcon 3.3 4 speed manual. Wasnt that quick but was ultra reliable. Got me around for 5 years with no troubles. Unfortunately it was stolen and recovered, never was the same car after that.

Only kept it for a few months after I got it back from being stolen, then upgraded to an EB1 5 litre.

First car? = Current car
When? = Ford were actually trying to sell AU stock prior to the launch of BA.
How much? = Less than retail with dealer extras
God or Dog? = um, it's a car last time I looked.
Favourite story - good or bad? Bad? I caught the cruise bug Good? It's easy to keep clean and maintain.

What: 1992 Mitsubishi Magna

When: Bought in 1998

How Much: $10,000 (including awesome setero setup)

God or Dog? : Absolute God. Flawless vehicle, still probably the best vehicle I ever owned.
