Default Ford Diagnostic tool built in you can use!!

First thing here, I have stolen this from another forum called Escape Central that I am in, it works on my Escape but the guy that found it was looking up on a Focus, so I assume its a Ford thing. Here is the copy and paste:

Well, while reading up on my new Focus I came across a neat little trick that may or may not work on the Escapes.

It is basically a way to put the LCD which contains the odometer/tripmeter into a "test" mode and get cool information out of it, such as battery voltage, digital speed readout, etc..

I've been told that it works on an F-150 and Mustang, and I tried it on my Focus, so all you Escapers might want to try it for shiggles!

Here's How:

) Insert Key (do not turn it)
2) Press and hold the Trip-Meter Reset Button
3) While holding the reset button, start your car and continue holding the button.
4) Within 10 seconds, the display should change to "test" (written in a silly LCD font) and the needles will go nuts. No biggie. Release the Button.
5) Pressing the button will now cycle through some 15 different modes.


The modes you can go through in the Focus are:

1. Gauge Sweep
2. Fill in All LCD
3. Indicator Bulbs
4. ROM level
5. NVM level
6. DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
7. Road Speed MPH
8. Road Speed KPH
9. Engine Speed RPM
10. Fuel Volume
11. Engine Coolant Temp
12. Battery Voltage
13. ABS fail
14. Electronic Brake Distribution Failure
15. Illumination
16. Crank Sense

How long now till your car can pick up a virus :P

All this technology in cars scares me.. i'm happy with my '67 for now.. ;)

well cant be far off, i think you can now get mobile phone viruses, as some of the latest models that are out now run software similar to windows or mac.

Wonder when Nortons will bring out "Nortons Automotive Edition" or "Nortons Nokia edition"

Heh.. and pretty soon when you get in you'll have to wait 5 minutes for your car to boot up, then log in instead of put a key in..

Damn.. hope they dont go windows based out: :

Or worse still, in the freeway it stops with errors. You need to close all you windows and re start. :hihi:

BMW had come up with a great idea a few years ago maybe 02 or 03 to have a constant link to the 7 series cars in Germany or some place. to keep a look at the health and performance of the cars.

The problem was the cars were hooked up to a sattelite and the internet.

:thebirds: they quckly found out that someone could hack in and cause trouble . (use your imagination)

its not exactly new, my 10 year old EF have the same diagnostic features, its just a print out of the sensors which the ecu uses to run the motor. im sure some 15 - 20 year old cars with EFI can do the same thing

All the fords have diag modes for their Clusters.

I can tell that the ont above DOES NOT apply to all fords. I suggest you do some research before your up for a new cluster.

I know for a fact the AU's diag mode is a LOT more complicated to get into than that.

yeah ... like pressing the odo button in for 1 sec .. and releasing it for 1 sec (repeat each step 10 times) ... hee hee ... hold for 5 ... release for 7 .... hold for 5 .... release for 7 ... hold for 5 again I think.

I posted it up for the AU people in the AU section ... need to be dead accurate with the timing as well.

Also to get out of the AU one ... you have to hold the odo button for 11 seconds exactly ... other wise it will just cycle through again.

The EF-EL one is different again ... and the doco can be found on www.fordmods.com ... also has the Police Cluster calibration details as well.
