The Ms and I are going on a holiday this weekend and will be on the road going from place to place most of the time.
Apart from chippies and shapes, beef jerky, some fruit and maybe some sandwich's, I'm not really sure what "snacky" foods to take! Does anyone have a favourite snack or could recommend something to munch on?

+1 on chico's and Allen's snakes, not natural confectionery, they dont taste as good imo. These are a must on my list when doing a road trip. Also some chewy.
Chips can be too messy I have found. I like bringing some assorted nuts like smoked almonds or macadamias, even salted cashews. Wash it down with some Red Bull, Mother or V to keep you awake when you drive.

although muesli bars are good, once you've eaten them, you get something to do as you try to pick the small bits out of your teeth. maybe not soo good for driving now i think about it lol.

I am liking some of these suggestions! hadn't even thought of chicko's or assorted nuts.
Now for a curve balls, the missus is lactose intolerant and can only eat gluten free things, so while I can scoff down everything above, she will probably have issues with some of those :(

Thanks blueoval! Well it looks like I now have a few more snacks to get from woolies / confectionery warehouse.
now I just have to find a restaurant that has a gluten and dairy free option on the menu... its harder than it sounds :( ahh how I love being able to gorge myself on everything, think we need to revive the AFF Cooking thread again too!

Pork rolls, or Bahn Mi, sorry but near a retailer, why stoop to anything else. In Brisbane the Kim Than (Vulture St) and the Kim Loi Bakeries make them, I have only tried the Kim Than bakery. Solid 7.5/10.

chips, biscuits, nuts, can all be messy generally.
So i normally go for the sugary lollies, snakes, strawberries, frogs etc, usually a pack of chocolates, m&m's, maltesers, clinkers, whatever. And beef jerky mmmmmmmmm If i do bring chips, always pringles/similar. least messy of the bunch. In terms of fluids, usually just water, some powerade. And maybe a red bull in case of caffeine hit needed. I dont drink soft drink or energy drinks, so if i have one, keeps me awake for hours....

^Effin Oath! I'm doing a 2000km trip soon and have ordered some Biltong from all the way over in Hahndorf S.A. (I'm in Lavington NSW) for the trip up. Also got some 'healthy' snacks like flavoured rice thins and Grain Waves, Red Rock Deli chips (which will make a mes in my car I'm sure XD) as well as Sesame Snaps, all for the girl. Oh, and some of those extruded soy crisps that they sell in the produce section of Woolies, next to the nuts, that you scoop yourself.
Plenty of water, and as far as energy drinks go I'm taking a couple cans of Mother, though only in emergency as a spike in energy will also result in a fast crash later on that you need to watch out for it you're behind the wheel. Fatigue tends to come down on you a lot quicker than you're ready for when you've previously been consuming such drinks, which for obvious reasons is something you need to closely monitor. I'd love to eat some home smoked turkey cages but it's far too greasy if you've got to grip the wheel. Plus, it calls for beer, which isn't good on a 13 hours stint behind the wheel.. A few hot cabana or smoked polish sausage are great to nibble on but have a few frozen bottles of water in a cooler bag, maybe one or two mixed with cordial, freeze half a bottle then top up with tap water and you're set. Buy a red bull or two if you must but save money by bringing drinks, red bull is mighty expensive! Also a selection of your favourites from charlesworth nuts is always good, but again plenty of drinks required as salty nuts make thirsty drivers/passengers!

I got the extreme version of the Bavarian Bum Burner (when they had a stand set up at Rutherglen for the Wild Deer hunting expo) ..even cutting the chilli flakes/seeds off the outside and eating the interior resulted in a cold sweat. "Tastes good but".

Well the weekend away was great, however it rained cats and dogs which means another "proper" road trip will be in order in the coming months, just need to find a new destination this time, I'm thinking I might head south over the border as the further north I go the more flooded it bloody gets!
Loaded up on chippies however after sitting in the apartment the first night, we both had a major urge for lollies, something like $50 later we had enough jelly beans to drown a small horse, lots of the natural food lollies, also got chockie and some strawberries (because we needed to con ourselves into thinking we were being healthy ) however no biltong as I forgot to drop into the Ettamogah pub on the way up.
