Hi all,
Becoming a regular here on AFF, looking at what work people do to their cars or who pays mechanics to do work, I thought I shoudl start a thread: What do you do for work? I'll start off. I'm a salesman for a Solar Hot Water small business (there is only me and the boss who works here). I know right, contradictory to that driving a V8 and all... I do some work on my car, basic things like oil and filter changes, but I've never done anything as serious as an engine swap, one day I probably will... once I learn more from the Mechanics here haha So what do you do?

House Husband.................Oh, and in my spare time I import and sell my own brand of LED pool light to just pool builders and large fibreglass pool manufacturers but I may have to move into retail selling as demand has been strong.
Cheers

Mechanical engineer - mainly designing earthmoving attachments (ie sitting at a computer drawing pictures)
Dont work on my BA except for minor under bonnet things like cleaning the air filter. Get a mechanic to do servicing and repairs. I used to work on my previous cars a bit more but still got the servicing done by a mechanic. I can do it myself if I wanted but can be bothered with things like oil disposal etc.

As far as my car I do as much as I can myself.
The only things I won't do are gearbox things, paint or internal engine things and turbo etc. Servicing I do myself

Commissioning Manager - Oil & Gas
Wish I could do more of the work on our project cars but little or no time at home due to o/s work sites, so I farm most of it out but buy alot of bits and pieces online and confident enough to fit the parts and set them up. |

mechanical engineer at the fimiston gold mine in kalgoorlie
do majority of things myself except for engine/box internals. at one stage or another ive pulled and placed engines, body work and spray painting on my old wagon. enjoy making custom panels to fit speaker and stereo units for cars predating the modern gear. interested in learning about sewing panel upholstery too. as well as some 'more dodgy than most' home exhaust mods. learned how to fit torque converters properly too. only took me three gear boxes! |

Rent-a-cop (Security Guard). You seen those movies where a security guard sits there and does nothing but drink coffee, read newspapers and eats dough nuts on night shift? That's pretty much me except I'm on dayshift only.
Formally a truck driver and once my bankruptcy ends I'm purchasing a van (or a small truck) and will subcontract out. I'll drain the oil, change filters and break pads if I feel like it. I usually just hand my BA over to my mechanic.

CPA in public accounting practice. I used to work on my old E-series Falcon's and Skyline, including changing exhausts, cams, doing brakes, suspension etc... Now that I have the XR6T I don't have the time or skill to do the mods, so I get my mechanic to take care of that. I don't even service it myself anymore.

Studying full time and work part time in admin. Boring office job but the pay is ok.
I am a very tight with my money so I only take cars to a mechanic as a last resort. Do just about everything myself except head/block internals. I'm happy to get stuck into transmissions and things like that, it's not as hard as it's made out to be and saves heaps of money.

Electrical engineer, working in the buildings industry.
As for my car, I do everything bar major engine work (ie rebuilds, removals ect ect) and paint/body work. Any job where I don’t need specialist tools, or specialist tools which I can purchase/rent cheaply (ie pullers, aligning tools ect ect) I’ll try to tackle myself . If it’s something that will cost me too much of my time, or needs expensive specialist tools to complete, I’ll let a mechanic do it. |

I am a project manager with a large aussie building company and also own a business on the side with my wife that she operates on a daily basis.
Cars are my way of escaping the daily stress of my job, I feel most at ease when I pull my car out of the garage especially on the weekend, park it on the lawn, crack a beer and just walk around the car, just looking. Usually some of my neighbours will come join and we sit around talking cars drinking beer. My old man got me onto that, every sunday he pulls out his red Austin Healy, his yellow VE3 HSV GTS and VN Group A SS. He cracks a beer and just admires each car which he places in particular positions. But I also love working on the car...I do everything but major engine work or work that needs hoists or specialists tools
