Default AU XR6 won't start

Guys,

I am thinking of purchasing a cheap 2001 series 2 AU XR6 auto, apparently the car won't start, kick's over fine. Has fuel and the smartsheld is working, any ideas I can start eliminating.

Cheers

Not pointless. Car cranks over continuously without firing up when relay is faulty.

PridenJoy,

Could I interchange with another relay to see if this is the problem, if so, what relay would be suitable?

Cheers

The starter (and ignition relay, either could be the problem) relay are in the engine bay near the battery. There's a diagram somewhere that describes which relay is which. Not sure if it can be swapped with any others without looking at them again but i would have thought they're easy to get from the wreckers, pick a part and such, to try.

Yes pointless. Starter relay will be fine.

The 2 relays are the ECU(or EEC) relay and fuel pump relay. With IGN on, check for 12v at an injector plug, ISC plug, or TPS plug. If there, the ECU relay is fine.

Ok. You obviously know better than the auto elec that i witnessed replace the starter relay and ignition relay on two separate cars and rectified the problem with exact symptoms as OP.

People can either take the advice and suggestions or leave it. It's been given anyway.

How do you know smartshield is working?
What is the warning light doing with the ignition on or white cranking?

Don't know, maybe get the auto elec on here to provide some details, rather than someone relaying something 2nd hand ? Just trying to give some simple universal advice to the OP to solve his problem. Why would you replace a starter relay when the starter motor operates correctly ? Why can't you say which relay caused the problem?, or whether it may've been simple bad connection problems ? Without knowing the complete details and testing, How do you know this scenario is exactly the same? When faultfinding, assumptions will cost you dearly.

And people should spend their time contributing to the thread rather than getting upset just because alternate advice doesn't match their 'staff answer'.

The possibilities are almost endless but common faults include failed coil pack, blocked fuel filter, failed fuel pump, and failed PCM ...

^^^ This. The engine is cranking over so it cannot be the starter relay. For any engine to fire up (not just AU's) it needs air, fuel and spark. Check for the three mentioned by snap0964 and go from there.

Are you 100% sure it's not Smartshield?

Yes you can. From memory, on the AU's the relay to the left of the starter relay is for H/beam, to the right you have the fuel and LO/beam relays. Basically, any of the relays on the second row from top in the "fuse box" next to the battery. They're all the same.

If you want to confirm, maybe try pulling out the "faulty starter relay" and see if the car cranks over. I bet you it won't.

Agree. Unfortunately you will always have people handing over advice and suggestions because they think they're experts on the subject. In this case the subject and question being on the AU Falcon. God help us all if the advice given is different to theirs.

Hi Jude How's that Tickford Fairmont going? You seem different on the forums to real life.

OK Fellas,

I rang the gentleman today for a bit more information about the problem, he mentioned that a red hand lights up, if this is any consolation to the problem.

I appreciate all the help, and most importantly we have one common interest in these Falcons, so let's not get into a debacle over a possible simple fix.

Cheers fellas

I have to agree that if the starter motor is turning normally its extremely unlikely that the starter relay is at fault. If it was at fault the starter would either not turn at all or turn very slowly (and in the latter case it's more likely corroded prongs on the relay or corrosion in the relay's socket). See the circuit here: https://fordforums.com.au/wsm/wire/a...html#page00009

If the light goes out after approx 3 seconds with ignition on, then all is good.

But if the stays on or flashes, then you have a smartshield problem.
System is separate to unlocking the car

Yeah, true. If they're going to have a go at you, at least use the spellchecker as well . . . .

Can you get access to the car to do some diagnostics? Hearsay over the phone won't cut it - you need to satisfy yourself with some testing.

Cheers Snap0964, diagnostics would not be possible at this stage.
