Exclamation Why Airlines Like To Loose Luggage

So what happens to all that unclaimed luggage that sits around ownerless?

If the airlines cannot find the rightful owner, they sell it by the truckload to a company called Unclaimed Baggage. Workers then pop open the suitcases, rifle through the contents, and then put the items up for sale.

Their website claims that more than a million items come through their doors annually, 60 percent of which is clothing. The remaining items, as you might imagine, is pretty much anything else one might pack in a suitcase.

Buyers can purchase the items online, or in person at the company's store in Scottsboro, Alabama.

A quick look through their site revealed a handful of digital cameras ranging from $50 to $200 and well as iPods for $25--most of which are probably loaded with someone else's songs (which could be a great bonus).

Unclaimed Baggage also dedicates an entire page to some of the more unique items they've come across, such as a full suit of 19th century armor, a live rattle snake, and "Egyptian artifacts dating back to 1500 B.C."

Man, it sure must be fun working there!

They loose your baggage, then they sell it.

Good scam

between transit flights (ie getting off one plane, connecting onto another flight) they dont transfer your luggage from the hold of the plane, to the next plane you are connecting on...and then it floats around somewhere in the belly of the airport until you put a claim in for lost luggage...

Missed the spelling correction in that one? ;)

That's pretty bad IMO.. Sure if they lose the luggage and can't find it at first it's a pain.. But to sell something like 19th century armour or Egyptian artifacts??? Surely they could give those back to the owner.

A guy came into our work today who clears out dead estates, gets to keep anything he finds if he likes.

This looks all very US based. Do you reckon anyone does this in Aus?

Never lost a bag yet in 12 trips but have had the cases damaged twice rendering them useless.

Friend lost a bag on a trip to USA. Got paid out by insurance. Did same trip again 6 months later ... bag lost again. Jumped and screamed until asked if he'd like to look at bags in lost bag shed. Checked it out and found not only his current bag but the one he'd lost earlier. Happy chappy.

City Rail (and most other companies like it) also hold auctions for things left behind.

If there are things left behind on our buses, since we only do group work, we always have a contact number for the person that booked it, so we give them a call and ask them to ask others who were on the bus if they lost anything. If they don't call us in 6 months, it's ours.

I've scored 2 mobile phones, a digital camera and a discman. Dad has never bought a pair of sunglasses in his life, and is currently sporting a pair of $400 designer ones.

We also have a collection of hats, umbrellas and really weird random stuff from pub crawls.
