Speculation that Ford might pull down the shutters by the end of this year based on the current climate:

It came as a senior car industry source told Fairfax Media that all three car makers were deeply concerned at calls to ditch the existing 5 per cent import tariff, now Ford, Holden and Toyota had decided to leave the country within the next three years.
The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said nothing was set in concrete when it came to departure, predicting that Ford was likely to pull out of Australia by the end of this year in any event, more than a year earlier than its announced 2016 closure date.

Not exactly supporting supporting the home product, but then they have a population of about 314 million. Not 22 million like us.
I wouldn't say that. The pickups together total 3 times the volume of the Camry
and the top ten is pretty evenly split between local product and Japanese imports (which for all I know are made there too)

3000 employees at toyota, 2000 at holden and 1000 at ford = 6000. Even if you take in all the employees at suppliers, theres no way the governments are ahead on taxes that they get back from the workers.

Holden claimed they get on average $150m a year from the Gov, their employees on average pay $130m in taxes a year

I can't believe Australia has more marques that Australia
Look at the the US manufactures and all the marques they produce
GM don't just build Camaro's
Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile Catalac and the rest
They have a huge amount of variants from 3 major manufactures then they have all stuff from the rest of the world which are cheaper and more readily available than here

Yes they have a larger population but I believe that their patriotism has a lot to do with why yanks buy their own cars

Thats income tax, I wonder how much more money the government gets when those workers spend their money on groceries and other everyday items (GST), then on petrol for cars, houses (stamp duty and what not), and then spend money on local businesses for their goods/services.

I know what you meant though, I can't believe we have more than USA either actually.

Shows how companies are willing to try their cars here despite the much lower population, knowing the local product will/would be ignored.

And then add the costs of welfare to those of the 6000 that don't get work immediately, never mind the others in support roles.

The closure of the Automotive industry will cost this country more than keeping it alive.

Dont forget taxes on the sales of the cars management salary taxes (probably 2 billion there) and tax on all inputs from all parts suppliers, service providers etc.

I guess 'they' (dont know who they are or if they can count) try and add it all up to determine the 'real' 'cost' and or benefit.

One figure in that article needs a little more explanation from the author.

Quote:
There are more than 60 brands sold in Australia, far more than in the United States despite the nation's much smaller population, and the vast majority of cars Holden builds here are sold domestically.
But according to VFACTS in 2013 there were only 45 makes available (44 if you take out Opel).

Alfa Romeo
Aston Martin
Audi
Bentley
BMW
Caterham
Chery
Chrysler
Citroen
Dodge
Ferrari
Fiat
Ford
Holden
Honda
Hyundai
Infiniti
Jaguar
Kia
Lamborghini
Lexus
Lotus
Maserati
Mazda
McLaren
Mercedes-Benz
MINI
Mitsubishi
Morgan
Nissan
Opel
Peugeot
Porsche
Proton
Renault
Rolls-Royce
Saab
Skoda
Smart
Ssangyong
Subaru
Suzuki
Toyota
Volkswagen
Volvo Car

Unfortunately that list of US cars isn't comprehensive either, it is a summary of the models and not all, just the top 248 best selling. It skips a few brands and unlike our vfacts doesn't show the breakdown of models, i.e. Ranger 4x2 and Ranger 4x4, Toyota Prius, Prius C, Prius V, etc. I am sure there are far more than 248 models.

All of ours with the breakdown into individual models for ALL makes available is 375 according to VFACTS

i didn't say the govt were ahead due to income tax. the revenue generated by the auto industry would far outweigh the subsidies. the income tax is just another revenue stream for the govt that is about to dry up.

We as a country are stupid to not protect our industry. When you take into account the import tariffs most countries have that protect their local producers.

They're not seperated by VFACTS and come under the parent organisation as they should. Otherwise you'd need to have AMG, M sport, Quattro.

Ahh, the good old days - blue collar workers only able to purchase 15 - 20 year old cars at premium prices. Spare parts worth more than the car. Electrical goods taxed at 21%.....

Abarth are what AMG is to Mercedes, a factory backed tuner, nothing more. They don't manufacture their own cars. They pump out performance based vehicles based on the donor car of their parent organisation. Again like FPV, HSV, etc. Don't agree take it up with VFACTS.

Lexus is a completely different manufacturer to Toyota, just like Lamborghini is to Audi is to Volkswagen.

Yup and an XR6 was $45k. Guess you saying that we are better off now with consumers getting more for their coin at the cost of local manufacturing. And if you are, there is nothing wrong with this either. You would be with the majority of Australians that think that way. For what its worth though, blue collar workers did buy local, it was the rich that bought premium brands. Now the blue collars are buying 5-10 year old preowned prestige instead of locals and dying a million deaths when they get their service bills.

suppose you're gonna tell me next that a LX570 is a completely different car to a 200 series Landcruiser. Release the grip from your finger and palm mate.

There was no XR6 in the 70's and early 80's.

Import Duty, Taxes and assistant packages during the 70's and 80's did not help the foreign owned Australian built car industry - Leyland closed up, Chrysler sold out, Nissan closed up, GM-H almost shut the doors and had to cut costs everywhere, Ford cut costs by dropping models and engines.

The car industry is not the only manufacturing that we have in Australia.

Protectionism taxes only hurt the average wage earner, who is also the majority in society and keeps the economy running strong.

There's a lot more to hitting everything with a big tax to try and save it. The economy has many facets to it, it's always changing, evolving and developing. Countries that don't change and develop get left behind.

It's sad that we've lost our car industry, but the writing has been on the wall since the late 1970's. Several changes in Government have not been able to save them, nor should they. Mitsubishi took a hand full of Government dollars and closed up, Ford took another lot of Tax dollars and announced closure - both under the Labor governments watch. Gm-h and Toyota have done the same.

Will the Government give my business a hand out if I can't make a profit? Will it help me pay the wages of my staff? Will you?
