They could have said:

'Ford is consolidating its products in to a global vehicle lineup, and will no longer have different vehicles for different countries. This presents Falcon with an incredible oppurtunity to become a one of the shining jewels in the Ford crown'. Done.

Instead, when the media asked 'what does this mean for production in Australia?' The Ford CEO arrogantly replied 'Next question'.

This is Fords fault.

The Media and journalists are supposed to report facts, not make them up, or create headlines that are designed to create controversy or push personal bias...

Here's a perfect example:

"End of the road nears for Falcon" JEZ SPINKS

WTF is that ?

What is that headline designed to do, make him a hero or push a personal bias ?

Why isn't it :

"Falcon future design still be decided" ? Hmmmmmm...... ?

So unless Ford answers every question the media asks, the media has a right to report any way they wish, as cold hard fact, when no facts were presented to back their story? Oh, and if any CEO doesn't want to lay everything out on the table, he is also arrogant? I see how it works. LOL

Please, CEOs arn't stupid. This was a deliberate and calculated press conference to spur the Australian government for future funding. The media frenzy is the price they pay.

Well actually that is a reference to 888. obviously.
After that, your post makes no sense... I'll leave it at that.

What funding? Like the one Mitsubishi got to stop it from going out of production in Australia? To me it's all about not getting funding, show a more moral means to an end, hence the tea party protest during the Detroit Motor Show.

That's interesting. Wasn't he talking about the Focus? Not the Falcon. (When he said it).
And just to add to that, he was talking to an American audience mainly, not the Australian government.

I for one will welcome Mustang/Falcon merger as they will have come full circle & return to where the Falcon started, will be sad if we lose i6 but to keep RWD in Australia will be a plus on the whole.

Just read in the Herald Sun, Mullaly has confirmed Falcon and Mustang platforms will be shared from 2016 "We've learned so much from the Falcon because its such a dynamite car...the whole thing about rear wheel drive? Were going to have rear wheel drive...(the) next version of the Falcon will be even better, in capital letters"

Thoughts?

Hey I'm not the one trying to gag member participation and posting lies about them. Perhaps he should address his own history of restraint and lead by example.

Once again back on topic: we all know that if the falcon does become a rebadged Taurus it won't dent sales, it won't change the fan base and probably be better value for the dollar.

If the local Falcon does go, the best we can hope for is that Ford Oz will continue the assembly line and not go the way of Nissan and Mitsy. The danger of Holden and Toyota following suit is all too real and that would be a tragic blow to employment and allied industries.

If Mulally is the cat that ate the cream and he is sitting on good news regarding forward estimates and market guidance, he may just change his tune given some breathing space and some high level representation from our locals. My feeling is that he is very nationalistic and Detroitcentric which means he will make decisions based on reinvigorating the USA fortunes first then dealing with backwater outposts later.

Hopefully that means that we get RWD Falcon and Mustang here. If they are based on each other then does that mean it would be easier to build RHD Mustangs alongside the Falcon?

This makes the most sense. Like i said earlier, at best the relationship between taurus and falcon are distant cousins. The mustang/falcon relationship is where it all lays, the fact that USA is keeping the mustang RWD is the answer to the question.

The only question on my mind is, will the falcon shrink, or will the mustang grow?

Either way, I would assume (assumption being the mother of all....well you no) The I6 will be binned for the egoboost lineup. Lincoln, falcon and mustang will be based off a single RWD platform (possible the crown Vic's replacement is the telltale for future RWD applications) The Taurus may well enter Australia, but i highly doubt it.

I said earlier the comparison between Mondeo and Falcon sales, IF the Taurus were to enter the Australia market, it would either A) need to be badged a falcon or B) not be here at all.

The Australian public hasn't picked up the Mondeo, It may well be a fantastic car, with a price take in the area of the XR6 falcon, yet the XR6 sells will and the Mondeo doesn't. Is it the name-plate? Is it FWD? I don't no. People might say they are 2 different class vehicles. If that were the case, the mondeo wagon wouldn't be the Falcon wagons replacement (in the eyes of Ford AU anyway)

Have people gone away from RWD? I don't no, People on here have drawn comparisons to the escort, but how many people here would jump at a RWD RS focus? I no I would.

Well any reason why the I6 cant go global with more R&D put into it?

Or when the two platforms combine then the cost savings might be enough for the I6 to stay?

2016... lol... dont get your hopes up. the US havent rescued themselves from the GFC, they've simply deferred it by borrowing more.

if you think the razor gang were tough this time, you're in for a treat... the real GFC is yet to come.

Awesome. This needed to be debunked quickly. I had a mate ring me at work yesterday freaking out (exaggeration) about it. I told him it's rubbish and I'll beleive it when I see it. Didn't know that'd be only 24 hours later Most of the media is trying to do a Mitsubishi on us.

Even better news. I assume this to mean they'll share an advanced or all new version of the falcon platform. Surely they wouldn't go back to the Mustang's live axle?

True, and the fact that the 3.7 ecoboost thing is so new means there is even less reaosn to keep the I6 which is a shame.

Im just thinking from a Geelong manufacturing POV, I will happily fork the dosh out for the last run of I6 XR6T's when it happens.

The current Mustang has a solid rear axle, but the next generation won't. Personally, I think IRS is one of those check boxes, just like DOHC. It doesn't necessarily make a car great, but it's a buzz word and people want it anyway. There's people who have driven the new Mustang and say it outhandles the Camaro by far, and ride quality is close to the Camaro's level. And seriously, who buys a sports car for ride quality?
