Or I could just change my current cap at no charge and get an I4 outright and just pay it off Over 12-24 months. This may be the better option. Am going to ring back tomorrow and work out the finer details. Where I can go at midnight to get one etc etc.

When you say change cap what do you mean by that, like go to another plan or what?

Let me know how you go, because I'm in a similar position contract wise, but I'd like to "upgrade" from the $79 cap I am on now, to the new $79 cap, and then get the i4 and get rid of my blackberry..

ok boys so heres the deal.

Being in contract i cant just upgrade handset and plan rah rah rah.

what i can do is change my cap over. so im now on the 'new' 79 cap with $800 calls, unlimited text rah rah rah. What i am going to do, is buy an iPhone 4 outright tonight, on voda's payment plan. which will be $32-37 a month. transfer the insurance from my 3G onto the I4, and just pay off my 3G in a lump sum ($55). so effectively for an extra 30 bucks a month ill have a brand new phone. yes its steep. but i can no longer tolerate my 3G. and i want to be trendy and fashionable and have a new iPhone. plus when my contract runs out in June next year, i can either keep paying by the month, or get a new contract with another new iPhone4 and flog one off and make some $$$.

so ill be getting to the city around 8pm tonight i hope to go to the goldsprints at the Galeries... its a fixed gear exhibition, with competition on thursday nights, then off to the voda store to line up. its a big event theyve tied up with the ivy, which is one of my fav venues so im looking forward to it. just need to convince some mates to cme so im not bored lol

So voda won't transfer you to the new plan even on a reduced payout? that's bloody homo

well im now on the new 79 cap. however still in contract. 3 did the same thing to me. its a pain that 12 month contracts dont really exist anymore. as i usually chew thru phones in little over 12 months which leaves me in the prediciment i am now in.

having said that, buying the handset outright may be the slightly dearer option, however it will land me with a 2nd handset when the time comes which i can sell and make a buck off if that makes sense. i might give my 3G to my mum. it will match her iPad nicely

I enquired about that with Voda as well, they said you pay out contract before you can update to another, not roll over into the new one. Want to update to Iphone as the N96 I have is a POS. Always freezes, takes so long to turn on, cuts out....etc

A year or two back Three let you upgrade your phone at 12 months i think, might have been 18 months free of charge but you had to sign up for another 24 months. Not sure if they still do it that way.

12 months - no
18 months - yes, depending on your loyalty

3 seems to look after loyal customers and if you speak with their upgrade team usually they very nice and happy to give discounts.

i found that this was the case when i was with 3. they were excellent with this and i upgraded my phone twice in a 24 month period.

however when i wanted to switch to an iPhone, i was quizzing them if they would release one on 3. they kept telling me no, will never happen etc etc. so i jumped ship (regrettably) to voda, and a month later the 3GS launches on 3. i wasnt happy. needless to say, im not real happy with voda either. but the new 79 cap seems like good value, and ill tell myself for the next year before i go to sleep at night that buying a iPhone 4 outright was a good idea.

Mobile price war looms for telcos
LUCY BATTERSBY
July 29, 2010 - 12:04PM

A mobile phone price war is looming with Telstra today doubling its data allowance for smart phone plans just days before the iPhone 4 is released.

This morning Telstra announced $49 plans would now include 500 megabytes of data, up from 200 megabytes, and $79 and $99 plans would include 1 gigabyte of data, up from 500 megabytes of data.

Telstra still offers less data than the iPhone pricing plans put out by its competitors on Tuesday, but believes its coverage gives it a competitive edge.

The move comes a day after Telstra's chief marketing officer said the plan it announced earlier in the week was competitive.

"I think everybody knows our network coverage is superior and our network is a lot better and the iPhone works a lot better on our network," Kate McKenzie said in Melbourne yesterday.

"The average user only uses 200 megabytes of data anyway, so we are confident that we have got a good compelling set of plans that will provide good value to our customers."

Telstra has been losing smartphone customers to its competitors over the last year. Optus signed on 709,000 new mobile customers in its 2008-09 financial year, attracted by its iPhone offers.

Telstra last updated its smartphone pricing in May, GoldmanSachsJBWere communications analyst Christian Guerra said.

"[The number of] Telstra mobile customers went backwards for the first time ever in the six months to December last year. They needed to address that and they are addressing that."

"Telstra is obviously saying - we're happy to take you guys on. It says to me that we are potentially going to move into a mobile phone price war in the back half of this year as more and more smart phone models get released," he said.

All carriers require customer to sign two-year contracts and the cheaper plans require customers to contribute to the cost of their smartphone handset. The iPhone 4 comes out tomorrow.

Vodaphone and 3 have merged so your still effectively with the same company. I hated my time with 3 and went to Optus with my iphone and haven't had a single problem for over a year. Its been magnificent!!!!

Will be upgrading to a white iPhone 4 in the new year with optus

Well I should have waited. I just got my mrs an N97 mini on vodafone. I should have waited and given her my 3GS and upgraded to the iphone 4. Vodafones new plans are really good.

On a side note Vodafone have ****ed me off to the brink of murder. I have spent 3-4hrs, 100 different indians and I still have not had the mrs telstra prepaid number (which is in my name) ported. It took 30secs to do it for my iphone yet this is the dramas to port for her N97. Her N97 is in my name ($10 off per month deal if I took out a second contract)

i swear by vodafone, i have hated telstra and optus phone for years, my oldies are still with them and hate them.
only got my 1st iphone 3gs a week ago from insurance after smashing my N95.
which was an awsom phone, but the N97 mini is crap
should be getting my iphone 4 tomorrow.

and the vodafone plan is $79
free calls, sms, pxt, video calls to vodafone and 3
free international, and free local call to any network
$800 included calls
1 gig data + 1 gig free
beat that telstra, and you network coverage is no better than the others unless your in bumfuk idaho, stop talking it up, you full of it.

I'd just like to reinforce that this iPhone is amazing. The screen blows me away. And the speed of it. Makes me realize how archaic the 3G is!

got my new iPhone 4 today and WOW. Screen rez is amazing and very speedy compared to my 3G....

Got the 32gb version on Optus (yes i know!) $59 extreme cap.
Vodafone here in Perth is only signing customers up then posting the phones out in a couple of weeks (yeah.... no thanks!).

Found out an out High School mate and fellow basketball team mate owns an AllPhones franchise here in Perth so he was kind enough to put aside a 32gb iPhone 4 when the stock arrived yesterday

Dont be fooled by Telstras new data plans..... The "extra data" is only available until November 1 then its back to crappy 200mb for some people..

If you sign up during the eligable period then you get the bonus, after that all new contracts get the old amount (or whatever the contracts at that period of time give you).

People who sign up during the bonus period keep that data allocation for the life of the contract, it does not revert back to the old amount.

Gee, you were 208th in line and still managed to actually get a handset. Im impressed.
I wonder how much stock of the handsets they actually got it?

Im seriously thinkin of getting one of these myself once the initial frenzy dies off in a week or two.
I was considerin a HTC HD2, Desire or Iphone4.
The first 2 are Telstra only, and that pains me severely, as Id have to buy outright.

Im with Voda and am 100% happy with my setup, have been for years.
Would not go back to opt-ar$e (optus) even if they had the best plans ever.
The online billing setup is rubbish where u have to log in to see it, or pay a few $$ for a paper bill.
Voda just email it and I pay it via bpay.. Plus other family members have had serious trouble with opt-ar$e as well..
