My late uncle had a VJ Valiant Regal he bought brand new. Back then most makers...especially Valiant...let you tick off any damn thing you wanted, no matter how odd or tasteless, resulting in some truly strange examples being found by people these days when they check the options list and what has been fitted from the factory.
His Regal was purple, with a brown vinyl interior, black carpets, oddly fitted with a full instrument dash but with column auto, no bench seats (as you would expect with a column auto) but fitted with buckets. Steel wheels with hubcaps (not the pressed steel five spoke wheels, the basic wheels), drum brakes all round (delete optioned the disks...no I don't know why...). Instead of the excellent 265 hemi he optioned it with the little 215 hemi. I don't even think it had power brakes.

Would I like to own that car? Yes indeed...weird as it was...

Holdens: I remember seeing a Monaro (HK I think) by the road side for sale south of Maryborough back around the early 1990's before prices went mad. It was basically a two door Kingswood or maybe even a basic Belmont. It had the following: 161 cube six, three speed manual on the tree, bench seats, vinyl interior, rubber flooring, the plain basic long rectangular speedometer (no sports instruments), basic AM radio, and drum brakes all round with steel wheels and hubcaps like any Kingswood would have, and was painted in a plain light blue colour. It was literally "one without the lot", and I was shocked it was still surviving in that same unmolested basic condition.
It was only $3500, but it was $3500 I certainly didn't have. If I could have bought it, I wouldn't have touched it apart from cleaning it up cosmetically...it would certainly be something unique as opposed to the "normal" V8 done up Monaros you see anywhere else.

Hey mate, thread is about the enjoyment of driving an old car, not how many times I look in the mirror.

i had a '78 datsun 200b. 4spd manual

i don't own it now, i sold it to some enthusiast. he was a picky bastard aswell.

anyway, what i loved about it was how it drove.

you could accelerate through the gears so fast. i fogged the **** out of it and it still went well.
I just needed to tweak the carby once and awhile. I set the secondary to open when the pedal was on the floor. it was like a rally car.

It would dive into corners and the back would whip out. no bad for 85kw's. hahah

If something went wrong with the car, it was an easy fix. great car.

At least you can put spokes on it, air bag suspension and leopard stripe trim and it would look like something a pimp would drive - cool

I love the old Fords ,
Its in my blood , it goes way back , dad even bought a new ford one time exciting ,
big station wagon ,
dont know the type 3 speed column, I think , big 6 , lots of room , thin steering wheel one , and thin tyres , a great machine

Yes...a guy my daughter used to live with had picked up an "old cheap car" he got off a friend while his Commodore was in getting fixed after an accident. It was a 200B SS coupe...independent rear end instead of the normal solid diff most 200B's had, factory twin carbs, five speed. A very rare car. He sold it off to the wreckers for some ridiculous price ($100 or something) when he was done with it. Little ***** didn't ask me if I wanted it..."I didn't know you'd want the old piece of crap"...

i got a cool 200B story

i popped the diff in my old mans 200B

he came home when we were half way through swapping it out drum to drum

ffs

just fixing the brakes for you dad

he brought us out some beers for being good lads

Older cars are just way more fun. I don't care how fuel efficient, how fast, how smooth, and how many gadgets the new ones have, they just lack the character and fun of the old stuff. That said, get a new car to get you around reliably and comfortably, but get an old one as the toy.

A few months back I found myself walking around and admiring a car, I would of never give a second look at 20 odd years ago. It was a little old 120Y just in a shopping centre carpark, it was neat as a pin. Had the old crochet cushions on the parcel shelve as well. I should of took a picture, but I was still puzzled why I was looking at it. It's amazing how much it stood out too car around it, I haven't seen one in years.

Years back I drive an old pintara 1987 model (r31 shape) from sydney to gold coast. It had no power steering, it was lowered to the ground, retread tyres, 5 speed manual, had a droning exhaust.. car used a bit if oil and seemed to start heating up a bit from around 120km/h and up. the trip was also raining most of the way.

we were bouncing, sliding, wrestling this car the whole way. In that car 100km/h felt like driving 200km/h in a modern car. Felt like we were driving in a rally event. Most enjoyable drive ever, so many hairy moments.

ive done the same trip in a new holden commodore on cruise control, quiet, smooth the whole way. Yawn...

Dare I say it Hulk, I think you're starting to get it. Although a pintara is still a little modern.

I like driving old cars as itS just a different experience. Lets face it, they are unrefined, dont handle, or stop. They break down more often and require much more maintenance to keep them running.

But its fun.

On another note, an AU IS old, to some. Its all relative.

An XB is not old, to some.

Stephen Kings' "CHRISTINE" was an old car in a car yard that had developed some kind of magical "presence" or life of it's own.Maybe that metallic,electric history of an old car makes them so special.

Only thing I didn't like about using my 'old' car as a daily a while ago was the fuel bill. That was only because I'd have plenty of fun on the way to/from work.

Can't wait til it's back on the road now

I'm a little confused Hulk, a while back you said that cars hadn't come very far in the last 10-15 years and that there was little difference between an FG and an EF Ford. Now you're saying that an AU is an old sloppy clunker? Which is it?

Yes it is lol, at the oldest they're from 1998.

1998 was freakin' ages ago.

For the first time in my life I found myself uttering the phrase "Now that's a 120Y I'd love to own"...

And you guys arguing about "old" cars have nothing on this guy...


Interestingly, Cugnot made a number of "firsts"...he went for the first motorised vehicle drive, he had the first motor vehicle accident (lost control and hit a wall) and was the first to be charged with a motor vehicle traffic violation!

Now thats a real "old car"...

I know, right? They were the butt of jokes for literally decades, then everyone seemed to forget about them for a decade or so. Now when you see one it's like "Hmm...they weren't such a bad little car...I can think of a few mods that would make such a light little car fly!".
The usual route is to fit a 2ltr SOHC engine out of a Bluebird backed by a five speed box, maybe turbo it. I saw one in Rocky a few years back which was patched with primer and sad looking, sitting across from me at the lights. Then I noticed it had pretty fat tyres on wide steel wheels. Then I noticed the bloody big intercooler behind the grille and protruding below the bumper. Then I heard the scream as it flew past as the light went green. Christ knows what it had under the bonnet, but a sad little pushrod 1200 it wasn't...
