Not exactly. They already use control floor pan, front suspension and rear suspension now, with the outer panels just bolted onto the rollcage etc.

Fairly sure the main change with COTF is that they are getting a control roll cage, rear mounted tansaxle and they might be going to composite panels?

Basically the cars will still look like a Commodore or Falcon from the outside....but from the inside....well they arent exactly a standard car as it is.

Does this mean there'll be a drive-shaft/jack-shaft straight off the crank to the rear transaxle? (doing 7,500 RPM )

Yes.

Personally I think they should have taken the opportunity to switch to using the GM LS3 and Ford BOSS302 or Cammer engines as the base engines for the Holdens and Fords in the category.

SteveJH, what's to say they won't use those engines?

Well according to the regulations a team can elect to run any N/A V8 engine they like, it will then be restricted to match the other engine outputs which effectively makes it a complete waste of time and money because all the development has been done on the current engines and introducing new engines would cost a small fortune to develop and make durable.
So there is no advantage to be gained and a heap of cost to bring one upto speed and a clean page on handling and weight distribution too.

Development is a sunk cost, the cost of building a competitive engine is a repeat cost.

For some reason I have a feeling it would be cheaper to get a modern V8 up to 650-700HP then it is to get the current old technology engines up there.

For starters they have a higher level of development as a starting point.

I think one of the V8xtra shows was saying the components to build a V8SC engine from scratch were over $100,000, with a rebuild costing over $20,000? And with a rebuild required once every couple of race weekends.....

As it currently stands with the current 5.0l HMS/Ford engines the development money has already been spent, these engines are bullet proof @ 650hp.
For the new tech LS3/Coyote engines it would be ground up development costs... You'd have to start again and for zero competitive gain.

The build/rebuild costs for a new engine would be no less than the current motorsport engine, in fact probably more, particularly for a DOHC engine, and that's without and development cost.

The engines currently used are 100% dedicated motorsport engines, the engines you propose are passengercar engines... Big difference.

Personally it would be a massive risk to swap and a huge imposition on development costs for no gain.

Can anyone shed any light as to why V8SC are going away from the bulletproof Aussie Hollinger box to a transaxle box?

Probably something to do with IRS and weight balance.
It will probably also end up cheaper using a combined Diff/trans/IRS pack than 3 separate working components.

Just for the record, as far as I am aware the Albins transmission is also an Australian designed and built gearbox.

They are an Australian based and owned company I believe?

Cost, pure and simple.
