The mere fact that we get up and go to work to make a dollar so we can pay our bills and have something for our future old age, beats sitting down and watching tv, well Dick has done that and made money like we all do. My point being, all of us would love to turn $1 into $2 dollars. Dick put his money into 2 reputable firms hoping to do just that, turn $1 into $2..how in god,s name was he to know that the businesses he trusted were going to go belly up. They were reptuable firms, i think 1 had $1.7 billion dollars in there banks, how does that firm go belly up in 10 months, thats not dick,s fault..he either got ripped off point blank or the people running the business didnt know how to run it......

I'm sure I read else where that the Ford logo's on the Wilson Security Falcons involved no money changing hands but gave the team some Ford/FPV company cars.

regardless of the car pictured in my avatar I have followed Dick and DJR since the XC days and still do. He is a character of the sport and much loved rightly so.

But he is playing in a rich mans sport and whilst I feel very sorry for him he has had years living the high life. It is very admirable that the fans like a lot of the members here on this forum want to assist Dick and Jill but remember there are literally tens of thousands of aussies out there battling much much harder than what the Johnsons are and who it would appear to be not worthy of this kind of generosity.

By all means buy his book or merchandise but consider donating your cash to the Smith Family of the Red Cross.

The people who ****-bag Dick for having the car should research the facts, in fact ring the dealer and ask who the first owner was as listed in the hand-book, my money says is says FoMoCo
I wasn't **** bagging Dick for having the car.. and yes its ex Ford motor co like all of his drive cars have been for years.

As for all this other **** well Dick should have more respect for his sponsors and fans, specially those that actually got him the cash for this season. Going on TV and saying your broke gives your team no confidence, and puts you in a silly predicament with sponsors and fans who would live in much greater poverty then him, but still would have thrown money at him to get him in the gate this season.

If I was sponsoring Dick I would be asking for a please explain, because now hes basically come and said hes insolvent. People don't want to risk sponsoring you when your broke, because it can make them look bad too? So why would you do it? Your either broke or you aren't. All this stuff that went on happened years ago. He should be in a better position now then he was back then so I am unsure of why hes coming out now?

I gave $10 of my pocket money in 1980. I was young and naïve. The 'Johnson Clan' are the masters of self promotion and 'spin'. They've made a career of exploiting the 'battler image' and sucking their loyal fans dry just to provide their family with a comfortable lifestyle. Dick is as cunning as ****house rat.

I'm 43 years of age, Financially i've been comfortable, then poor, then rich, and now i'm comfortable? I've lost two wives, the first from a drunk driver, the second from pancreatic cancer. I have blood thrombosis and have to take 13 mg of warfarin every day just so my blood doesn't clot. I have multiple compression fractures in my back from working to hard as a young bloke from trying to succeed and enjoy life. I've never asked for a handout and always was the master of my own destiny, and willing to accept and admit any mistakes that I've made along the way.

Sad story for some perhaps, but that's life. I'm a bit short of coin this week, whats the chances of somebody setting up a fund for me perhaps, or having the privilege like Dick has of exploiting the media to sell a book or cry poverty everytime things get a tad difficult?

I hear you Glen, my business went bust through no fault of my own which has really affected my life and that of my family but I'm not on here trying to get sympathy or hand outs from Joe Public, I don't want it, Dick has been doing this from the day when Tru Blu was destroyed and has relied on this since then to keep his own dream alive.

Maybe he will fall back to earth and become a commoner like the rest of us and not playing with millions of dollars of other peoples money.

Whatever happened to "Australian Mateship"?

Seems to be a myth, along with tourists believing that they can walk straight off the plane & photograph a Kangaroo.....

I am just wondering, are you able to provide any supporting evidence, I'll repeat, rock hard evidence to support this claim? Or are you just speculating?

I also wonder if they won Bathurst this year by some miracle, I wonder if you would say "Onya DJR" and feel a sense of pride?

By the above accounts your not entitled to it.

Mateship is when you help someone out when they are in a financial bind. When they keep coming back with the same b.s every year that's called exploitation.

Self inflicted, by doing everything to keep his racing team alive... What is there to say about it other than, if we all had as much passion as Dick, maybe this world would be a better place! He got taken for a ride, can't see how it is self inflicted. Happens daily sadly, more passion less ******....

I wish him the best and can admire the determination to stick with it but seems to me he should of cut his losses and run a long time ago.

The staff would have got other jobs and fans would have other cars to follow. I guess passion sometimes blinds you to what is the most sensible thing to do.

Someone would have bought the team and those working there most likely would have kept their jobs anyway.

charlie isn't the one going to the most lamest show in australia crying poor
charlie isn't the guy who burnt investors by putting his name to a ponzi scheme
charlie wasn't the one who burnt other investors by starting a 2 bit pathetic excuse for a company
charlie made his millions by being a great businessman, not by siphoning sponsors money from the team into his personal account

Sometimes you have to know when to walk away. Hanging on and financially breaking yourself and your business beyond the point at which it becomes obvious it isn't going to ever get better is no way to go...and sorry, but sympathy is thin on the ground when it's obvious people know what's coming but keep on throwing money on the flames anyway...

This is quite an interesting situation...

We have one of the most successful entities in Australian racing, a national celebrity of sorts...a true blue folk hero. So where is all his money, can't all just be down to one poor investment.

Why have Shell and Ford who have gotten such widespread visibility though his name and achievements now don't have confidence with ol' dick, while lesser names like Tekno motorsport can attract some big names...

Somewhere there must be some poor management around the Johnson camp...

I wish him all the best, he isn't a charity case...

There are way worse people then him in our country, genuine battlers that don't have 100's of thousands tied up in race cars, people that don't have houses...

The Herald Sun had a much larger preview of his book. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/v8-icon-dick-johnson-reveals-he-lost-91m-in-dodgy-deals/story-fnii5s3y-1226682480052

IMHO the key to DJRs financial success and failure lies in this paragraph:
"The first blow, a mere jab compared to the uppercuts that would follow, came in 2000 when I lost my good friend and general manager Wayne Cattach to V8 Supercars. Wayne was the best operator I had ever met. Appointed by Shell, he walked into my garage at Acacia Ridge one day, and I threw him the keys to the factory and my chequebook."

and this:
“Shell was heavily sponsoring Dick Johnson at the time, but was concerned about some elements of Dick’s business,” Wayne Cattach explained to Speedcafe.com.au
...
“There were the initial business problems that I had to sort out, but I was amazed by the amount of talent and dedication that I found in the race team. http://www.speedcafe.com.au/2011/02/25/wayne-cattach/

Some of you are great with managing money; some of us are not.

It's not the business that is to blame.. It's his silly business mistakes that have cost him his wealth. There's more to it. But people only see what they want to see.

Sigh.

What a predictable end to an otherwise decent thread. It's a real shame that passion and loyalty can be questioned by people we have never met from the internet.
