I'm looking forward to the re-introduction of the 747 service from PER to SYD. It's been close to 2 years since the 743's last came here, next month the 744 service starts.
Not many 744's come to Perth.

Did anybody see the video of the Air France A380 letting a Comair CRJ-700 know who is boss. I am on my iphone so can't post youtube link, but the wing tip of the A380 hit the tail of the CRJ during taxi and tossed it like it was a toy. Amazing no major damage occured, was surprised the tail section never broke off the CRJ. If you haven't seen it just search on youtube or google.

My latest model arrived yesterday...
A8-274 - Delivered to RAAF 06/12/93. Former USAF FB-111A and F-111G AF68-274. Was painted in special 6 Sqn 60th Anniversary Paint Scheme. Grounded from 12/02/02 to 2003 due to wing failures. All F-111Gs retired by 2007. Due to be scrapped 2011. ![]() ![]() Here's a photo with it's F-111C mate, A8-127. This could have been circa 1993 when the gunship grey G's arrived when the C's were still painted in SEA greens (if you ignore the tail numbers, that is - 274 Arrived approx 3 months after 127 crashed near Guyra) ![]()

In other F-111 news, here are some overhead shots of the current situation out at Amberley.
Scrap heap - interestingly, the six complete planes to the right of the frame have had all their external gaps taped over, I would assume this might mean they are the ones that are going to be preserved. ![]() Ready for the bin - ![]() Random planes - ![]() This one is interesting, as some of you may know this is tail 63-9768, which is the third pre production F-111A, "City of Graham". Not fitted with escape capsule, but has ejection seats instead. The RAAF used it as a repair aid. ![]() Some better shots of it At the F-111 program roll out, 1964. ![]() USAF colours - ![]() As it stands now - ![]() ![]() ![]() So the moral of the story is I wonder how much they can sell me a TF-30 for?

Hey Darren, I also got it from Fluying Mule, this was about 6 months ago now. I had to get it on a special order even then, so I'm not sure whether they would still have stock.
Good luck.

So this week I decided it was time to modify the detolf to fit all my model aircraft in one cabinet rather than have them all over the place. Originally the Detolf only has 3 glass shelves and I guess you could consider the base a 4th. So last week I measured the shelves and had a glass place cut and edge 4 x 4mm thick shelves for me. I purchased some wire rope grips this morning and 6 of those battery operated LED push lights. Total cost to modify was $120. Now 1 single Detolf is $169 again it only has 3 shelves, it would cost me $140 just to go pick it up (I am 400km from Ikea) or to have Ikea post it is $80. So I save myself a bucket load of money modifying the original and it looks better not having heaps of space between shelves. There is still space for 2 more shelves when more models start arriving, but nothin takes my fancy right now. I am really happy with it and it looks much better than the photo's show. So here are some pics of the setup, excuse my messy house and the blurry pics. I was using a point and shoot with the room dark and no flash.

Thanks. It looks much better now with all the lights turned off in the house. It is a pity I could not get powered lights as I could leave them on. The batteries are only good for 100hrs. We leave a light on for our 5yr old so she can go to the toilet at night. This would work great as it is bright, but not as bright as leaving a light on. But a powered setup from the local lighting place was $65 for a 1m strip of LED lights that you stick to the glass.

Thanks. Yes it is a detolf. I measured the shelves and had a glass place cut me shelves and then bought 6mm wire rope grips from bunnings. The 4 shelves plus grips ended up being $90 or so. Much cheaper than a new detolf and imo looks better without all the empty space. |

I guess its the downside to seeing these great planes flying around instead of sitting in museums.

The poor B17 didnt crash, it actually had an inflight fire and landed safely in the field with the wheels down as per normal. So in effect it wasnt a "crash". The fire took hold because its AVGAS and it took some 20mins i think for fire trucks to arrive. A lot can be salvaged from it, so one hopes it will live again in other restored B17s.

I guess the one bit of good news about the F-111's being retired is that we will be able to see one in SEA camo again! Well, almost...
A8-132 in it's ARDU scheme. ![]() ![]() Here you can clearly see the intake 'fins' that were added to disrupt airflow to the TF30's. I believe this was an RAAF innovation. ![]() Interestingly, even though General Dynamics designed and built the aircraft, by the end of it's life, Boeing had gained the OEM certification for all F-111C's, due to the extensive modifications and maintenance carried out by them over the years.
