Not true. But of course the unrestricted sections are in rural areas. There are many speed restrictions (often variable) where traffic is denser, plus bear in mind driver legal liability above 130 that I mentioned before.

There is a much more mature and responsible attitude to policing road safety than here, without the revenue raising political motivator. At the other end of the scale, don't consider exceeding the 50 and 100 limits in urban areas and normal highways, they don't like that.

It wouldn't make a difference to me, I would go even if every single Autobahn was closed down for maintenance. I'm not just going back to Germany to drive on a public road.

Take an ICE train between Nuremberg and Munich which runs alongside the autobahn. You can enjoy overtaking the cars doing 200 at 300 km/h!

One of the Ford GTs that hold the standing mile world record of 284mph, that would be fun.

I very much doubt they would do that. As soon as you put a number on a sign people consciously or sub consciously aim for it. That's the beauty of unrestricted limits people seem to drive at a rate that best for them and their concentration and comfort.

I was there in 2006 doing the backpacking thing, but driving around the ring was on my must-do list right from the start. I never play video games but I even started practicing on the Playstation in preparation before I left

We didn't pre book anything cause we had no idea when we'd be there - the beauty and curse of travelling without a plan. We managed to get a Mercedes SLK for the day from SIXT in Frankfurt, drove out to the ring, and did 4 laps each in it. Got some funny looks - I think some people realised it was a rental and thought we were crazy, but back in those days there were no specific rules, at least that we knew about. The car was returned with heavily feathered tires, severely worn brake pads, way over the free km limit, but not a scratch on it.

Cost us 190 euros to hire, laps cost 108, 120 in fuel which 10 years ago on a back-packers budget was a huge outlay, but worth every cent - one of the best things I've ever done.

The SLK was quite fun on the autobahn - we didn't see any unrestricted stretches between Frankfurt and the Ring, but still managed to nudge 200 a few times. But if money were no object I think I'd like to step up to the S65 AMG next time

All about comfort on the autobahns so I think that would do nicely.
