Cant believe this hasnt been said yet, but cant you fence the dog up instead of the cars? Thats what i'd do, your back yard seems like a pretty decent size so give the dog about half or 3 quaters of the yard? That means you dont have to open and close a gate everytime you want to get to the cars.

For a project like that, i'd have to get the landlord's permission..... trying to avoid going to him :P

Don't chain the dog up, the stupid thing (with all due respect) will probably strangle itself. Seen it happen before.

What I do suggest is a radio electric fence/containment system:

Put simply, you place a wire with a transmitter near where you want to stop the dog going, the dog wears a collar, that when approaching it buzzes, if it gets too close it gives the dog static electricity. They work fairly well. Eventually you MAY be able to turn it off and get rid of it, but some dogs are smart enough to realise when they are not wearing the collar that they don't get buzzed and zapped (even stupid ones!)

Not sure how much the Sureguard one is, but one of the easiest options.

Heres another one, at $179 seems good (not sure if this one just buzzes or gives static too, but Innotek are well known with this type of stuff)

I think an electric fence should be a last resort, your dog is bored how about taking him for a walk in the morning or after work to deter it from getting into mischief. He is curious about your car for a reason, maybe it smells like bonios or a cat has been on it before?

Telling it off after about 5 mins after the incident has happened is pointless as the dog will have absolutely no idea what you are telling it off for, most people come home from work to find something the dog has done only to call it over and then tell it off. The dog will now think it is being told off for coming to you. I am not a dog psychologist by any means but have gone through a bit to try and get my dog to behave with dog experts. Dog behaviour certainly make more sense when you start to think like them. The idea of a car cover is a good one as is fencing off the car port but these are both work arounds not actually getting to the root cause of why the hell does your dog think your car is a play fence?

Grow the grass around the carport to make a fence. Otherwise a make shift chicken wire fence is a good idea.
I have the same problem with cats, if I ever catch them on my bonnet there will be hell to pay.

If youn catch it doing it get angry at himn and tap him on the nose with a couple of fingers every time you catchj him . If he keeps doing it take him to the car and rub his face against the damage and tap him on the nose again or sprinkle heaps of pepper around and on the car and rub his nose in it.

My brother had a staffy a good smart one. he always had a 4X4 thou.
A mate had a staffy that jumped on his black TE 50. and his brothers fairlane. and then his old mans LTD just repainted from hitting a roo. and then my SS. I could not believe a dog would jump on a bonnet. but they do! i haven't seen that dog since. i will ask what the go was.
I would give it a good rap over the head, every time with a sock full of sand. and a rousing, it will learn. all in good time.

What the hell ? Rub his nose in pepper, that is cruel. It's like rubbing a dogs nose in it's own , completely useless.

Update: Car cover worked for a bit, then it be came a novelty for her to start chewing on that :| and climbing underneath and having a look in the windows to see if anyone is in there *scratching the door while at it*

Got some stuff called Multicrop Skedaddle at the moment, supposed to be a deterant that the dogs cant stand.... dont know how that will work, might have to buy a ton of the stuff and have the cars just park on it rather than gravel :P

Chicken wire wouldn't look nice. How about those prefab vinyl fences where you just buy the right length (they might come in 6 feet sections), buy some corner joint thingies then attach them? Oh, with a gate part too. At least dogs don't climb up like cats do.

OR, buy a bunch of citronella bushes. Place them all around the carport so your doggie won't go near it. Just remember to place some in front of your car too so it's surrounded by the citronella plant. Doggies don't like that scent.

Bunnings has deterrant for dogs and cats. You could, as previously suggested, try a couple of .22 lead aspirins. Fix the painfull scratches real quick.

Electrified bonnet. Set up an HD video camera nearby and get it on film, that way you have a neat video of your dog doing a little dance for Funniest Home Videos.

Car doesn't go out the back anymore as I have inherited 2 more dogs from my parents divorce, Lucky me :(

Turns out, next doors cat was sitting on the roof of my car... and the Dog hated it.. so the dog would climb the car trying to get to the cat.

P.S, that car i skillfully sold, bonnet scratches and all ;) Dog never did it to my XR8, but someone did Egg it before i bought it, and rode a pushbike into the rear of it... so worse than dog marks :P

My parents have a Staffy, far from dumb and very obedient. All comes down to training.
