I’m pretty sure that they would be called idiot cams.

Queensland government spokesperson.
It’s quite obvious that those ten people were travelling well above the posted speed limit otherwise they’d still be alive today.

There was a death in Geelong last year where an old bloke riding a push bike had a heart attack and fell off his bike and onto the road where he was struck by a car. Did the heart attack kill him or being struck by the car? Either way, they still added it to the road toll. They also add suspected suicides.

And they wonder why we don’t trust statistics.

No, they use the low population number to change the view of that particular figure, but forget to mention rising population in all other states.

I reckon one day they will invent acceleration cameras... if you accelerate too hard away from the lights you get fined.

You know, in the name of safety.

-QLD and VIC the safest states to be on road
-Australia's holiday road toll is at 44 deaths
-Nationwide campaigns targeting speeding drivers appear to have brought results, with a 10 per cent reduction in road deaths last year.

Overall, 1368 people died in road crashes last year, down 139 from 1507 deaths in 2009.

The introduction of covert speed cameras has been credited with helping reduce Queensland's road toll by a quarter to the lowest level since records began in 1952, with 247 deaths last year compared with 331 in 2009.

Despite booming population growth, Queensland and Victoria are the safest places to be on the roads.

Queensland recorded 18 per cent of the nation's road deaths last year but has 20 per cent of Australia's population.

Victoria has 25 per cent of the population but recorded 21 per cent of national road deaths, with 291 people killed, one up from 2009.

The evidence from Queensland's speed camera changes last year will put pressure on Victoria's new Baillieu government, which made a pre-election pledge to publish daily locations of mobile speed cameras.

A spokesman for Police Minister Peter Ryan said the government was consulting with police about rolling out the changes but it would not come at the expense of public safety.

"There is a wide perception that they have been revenue raisers and we want to regain public confidence in speed cameras," the spokesman said.

Opposition police spokesman James Merlino said the Coalition had to ensure any new initiatives reduced the number of road deaths.

The Northern Territory retains its position as the most deadly place for road accidents, with 3.6 per cent of last year's fatalities but only 1 per cent of the country's population.

The road toll rose from 31 in 2009 to 50 last year, the final two deaths coming from a tragic accident on New Year's Eve that killed two children.

Currently Australia's holiday road toll sits at 44 after a man was killed in a single-car collision in Bathurst yesterday evening.

The 31-year-old male driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Orange Base Hospital with minor injuries.

His passenger, a 22-year-old Mount Druitt man, died at the scene.

His death takes the NSW holiday toll to nine.

The death was one of four yesterday, with one in Queensland and two in Victoria.

Police said a cyclist in his twenties was killed in a single-vehicle accident at Booroobin, near Maleny, on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, taking the Queensland toll to 12 for the holiday period.

Earlier, the death of a 53-year-old cyclist at Drysdale, south-west of Melbourne and the death of a man in a hit-run at Bendigo pushed Victoria's Christmas holiday road toll 16.

Three people have died in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, while Tasmania has recorded one fatality.

South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory remain fatality free.

They are some of the biggest spin doctors and overall BS artists around.

For example:
What we are first told…
There was a fatal accident on news years eve where a ute driven by a 13 year-old crashed, killing two, a 6 or 7 year-old and a 14 year-old.
Four other children were eventually air lifted to Alice Springs hospital.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/bre...-1225979591355

Three questions from me.
Were they aboriginal?
Was the driver affected by alcohol?
Did the accident really happen on the Lake Elliott access road?

See if this accident happened in Melbourne, Sydney or any other populated place, my three questions wouldn’t be needed because they would already be in the first paragraph of the story.

What really happened.
The so called ute was actually an NL Fairlane and there were eight kids in the car. The two children who died were 5 and 14 years old.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...section=justin

The reason I ask whether the accident really happened on the Lake Elliot access road is if it didn’t, these deaths wouldn’t be able to counted on the road toll, and the passengers wouldn’t be able to access compensation for their injuries.

Sooooooo, how is removing the open speed limit on NT highways or adding more speed cameras going to prevent this happening in the future?

And if you don’t know where Elliot is, Google Tennant Creek and go 250 k’s up.

Seems like there's nothing we can do to stem the tide of speed cameras. You'll just have to make a point of speeding in "non-safe" areas.

dont' be mis-led, piracy is on the increase, they just use AK-47s instead of sabres, and they are mostly nigerian.. Whether that'll stop global warming i'm not sure.

Just change governments, apparently that fixes it. Apparently there are none in Victoria now.

Speaking of making statistics say whatever you want, Ive checked out the lastest statistics available from 2009 in NSW

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety...stics_dl4.html

From these stats Ive selected the area where in Fatal Crashes the most people have passed away.
From this to be a fatality on the road, I've come to the conclusion that they will most likely

Be a male aged between 30-39.

Have a standard (Black/gold) Licence

They will be sober, not fatigued (or unknown to be fatigued) & its unknown if they are wearing a seatbelt but theres a good chance they will be.

It will happen between 2pm-4pm on a Sunday

The road will be 2 way undivided. They will be doing 60kph, Not speeding, It will be on a straight road in the dry in Gosford, most likely on the Pacific Highway.

They will hit a tree located near an entrance/driveway caused by a distraction outside the car.

So looking at this & you could say to stop the majority of crashes. Get drunk, drive tired, dont wear a seatbelt, speed, dont drive in the afternoon on a sunday & chop down all trees.

P.S. im just joking with the last comment please dont break the law on the road.

I can see how speed cameras would lower the toll.

Road with a blackspot, 12 deaths in 2009
camera is placed there. Drivers slowdown and pay attention. 5 deaths in 2010.

Not advocating the use of cameras, but its not that hard to see how they can work.

Queensland leads 10 percent national road toll reduction
By Tim Beissmann | January 4th, 2011

The national road toll decreased by almost 10 percent in 2010, with the number of deaths in road crashes down from 1507 in 2009 to 1368 last year.

Queensland led a list of four states to experience a reduction in its road toll, while the Northern Territory had the highest increase in fatalities.

Queensland’s tally dropped from 331 in 2009 to 247 in 2010, a reduction of more than 25 percent.

Police Minister Neil Roberts said a significant proportion of the result had to be credited to the enhanced police influence on the state’s roads.

“We’ve had 106 additional traffic officers on the beat enforcing the road rules,” Mr Roberts told AAP.

“The introduction of covert speed cameras has had a significant impact on driver behaviour.”

The Queensland road toll is the lowest since records started in 1952, both in total numbers and from a ‘rate per 100,000 population’ perspective.

In 2010, the fatality rate was 5.5 per 100,000. The worst rate on record was 1973 when it was 32 per 100,000.

In terms of percentages, Tasmania was the biggest improver. Its road toll was down more than 50 percent from 64 in 2009 to 31 in 2010.

The New South Wales toll dropped 32 to 421, and South Australia shed one fatality for a 2010 total of 118.

Victoria’s road toll went the other way, increasing by one to 291. Western Australia’s tally went up by three (192 total), ACT’s six (18) and Northern Territory’s 19 (50).

The Northern Territory remains the most deadly region on a per capita basis. It has just one percent of the nation’s population but makes up 3.6 percent of the road toll.

Conversely, Victorians account for 25 percent of the population but only 21 percent the road toll, while Queensland has 20 percent of the population but only 18 percent of the vehicle-based fatalities.

Yes but that is neither here nor there.... one can ask:
How many cars travelled that road in 2009 as compared to 2010?
Was the road upgraded to remove a black spot?
Was it just sheer co-incidence that a larger number of crashes occured in the same spot? Was it wet weather related?

Like its been said, statistics can be made to show anything..

Yes driving around like an idiot at high speed in a 60 zone is asking for trouble, but speeding alone doesnt cause accidents.
Not to mention that if a driver is pulled over for speeding how likely is he to adjust his driving for that particular day at least, as opposed to speeding past a hidden speed camera and getting a "bill" in the mail 3 week later?

what if the guy is doing 140kmh in a 100kmh zone.... he keeps driving for 3 more weeks before he looses his licence?

More police active on the roads sends a clear message to people that they are out there, what does a hidden camera do ?

Yeah, that’ll work.

Except when the black spot was bypassed with a four lane freeway and the speed limit was dropped along with the speed tolerance.

Then the penalties were increased along with a greater number of “safer” cars except they still keep referring to the statistics that were on the old road.

Hmmmmm.

Edit: Jim Goose kinda bet me to it.
