I hope these satellites know what time it is and which days are school days, because here in Victoria it's hard enough to keep up with what the speed limit it is when it's changes for when schools is are in or out or on and off.

They could spend our money far more wisely in educating people to drive safely, starting in making it a compulsory subject in School

oh.... i heard this on the radio today........ What planet are these people on?
It wont happen, think of all the reasons why you may "need" to speed, and if you had this silly gps speed limiter stuffing around it could be fatal, they should bung them on cop cars as well, it would be funny to watch them trying to chase someone down when they cant exceed the posted speed limit.

I'll guarantee a BIG political poo-fight in NSW IF this state tries it on for all private vehicles so registered here. Repeat offenders, yes mebbe.

Will *not* happen in this state, guaranteed. The move will not curb the 80% of crashes that occure below the speed-limit. Proponent advocates from NZ and QLD with Victorian complicity can stay away.

Quite the contrary - the state governments give us power and it is quite appropriate they remain. Australia was, indeed still IS-absolutely, a nation of sovereign states, so we are 'Australian' by name only - yet in societal terms - the populaces are quite 'different' in attitude, lifestyle, business approach.

The strongest legislative power rests at state level, not with the Commonwealth, despite attempts to make it so by both sides of politics, and from all three levels of government.

A balance is required, and we have it almost right, we can do away with some 'duplication' safely.

One application where this technology would be good would be in Police pusuits.

Rather than someone doing 100+ km’s down city streets, the cops hit the remote kill switch and there’s a lot less carnage.

This will NOT happen as the stste Governments will miss out on millions of dollars thru the speeding fines. If it did where will they get the money from then?

One minor stuffup in this whole thing. How many here currently own satnavs and have had them lock onto the wrong road?
Or tell you to turn where a road does not exist.

So you are on the freeway at 110 on a wet day passing over a school and suddenly the vehicle in front of you thinks it is in the 40 zone because the satellite data is skewed and with no indication whatsoever suddenly slows to 40 and causes a umpty dozen car pileup killing several people including your family?

All in the name of safety?

But this is Victoria and you victorians keep voting these nutters back in so you have to wear it don't you.....

Everywhere else in the world where this has been trialed it has failed and other countries actually have accurate maps.

yes Ok I am driving and come across a 2 trailer road train and 2 caravans, you want to tell me how i can safely overtake this mess without going over 110km/h??

The only thing worse than your comment it twits who come to a overtaking lane and then use 3/4's off it to get past a truck as they refuse to go over the speed limit or wait till 100 metres of lain has gone before starting to over take, meanwhile the 4 other car's now still stuck behind the truck have to take a calculated risk to get past.

Now im sure when you are putting around the metro aria this isn't a issue but being stuck doing 90km/h when you have a 800km to cover gets slightly frustrating.

120km/h LMAO

I'll like to know which company is pushing this idea. Lets face it, if it goes a head, someone stands to make a lot money selling it to everyone that has to buy, just so you can go about your every day life. Plus i don't like the idea of the goverment of knowing where i am traveling to & from, not to mettion just how it can be open for abuse buy anyone that want too.

I have driven trucks since 1976, I am used speed limiting, I am sure others will get used to it too. Did a canberra last night in a b-double, just for the fun of it, speed limited the whole way - no big issue.

well actually for all the people on this forum the funny thing if this does get put in it'll take some nasa geek to hack the system and provide a program on the internet that'll tell the speed limiter that it's doing the right speed then you'll have modded cars that never speed.

i tell you what i say bring it on even though i know it'll never happen it's just far too dangerous way to many ramifications if the system stuffed up.

way too much control being laid down by our goverments

It is an urban myth. At least as far as the M7 goes. I worked on the M7 doing signage and got to know the guys doing the toll install when I was working next to them and the system cannot do it. There is too many variables in it and the fact that there is no set points marked for them to clock you correctly means it will not happen. Remember you are only photographed on an entry or exit point to the M7 and only if you do not have a functioning toll tag.
The computer system cannot handle taking pics of everyones cars and not everyone gets on and off in the same place.

Since 76'? Time you went home, your parents are wandering where you are:-)

Your 120km/h suggestion will not happen, NT is currently at 130km/h, and it is quite possible other roads around the jurisdictions could also go the same eventually.

Derestriction is certainly not off the agenda.

The setting of prevailing speed limits or derestriction, particularly 'sign posted' ones, remain solely state responsibilities.

NSW will not mandate this for en-mass MA, MB, or MC categories, despite what media may say.

Correct, that is if they are not identified to each vehicle, in which case they will know exactly which car was speeding and send you a ticket..... more revenue,
In which case half the population will probably end up loosing there license, therfore there jobs too, can't pay bills..... life gets too hard and commit suicide......... Just one ugly ramification from this ridiculous idea.

Like to see them try and fit one of those things to a 1968 carby fed 302 Falcon.

Personally I don't mind the sound of it. It would be possible to make it impossible to go over the speed limit, therefore you wouldn't have to worry about speed limits at all. It is sanitising the car a bit, but its all in the name of safety. I'm sure it would be an option, as the police would still want to make revenue from speeding. HOWEVER I would oppose it if the speed limits were lowered even more than what they already are.

Mark my words speed limiting will happen to cars and not as far down the road as what people think.

I have seen a system in place in a factory where a forklift could only do certain speeds in certain "zones", in high pedestrian traffic areas the fork could only move at walking pace, when driven in a warehouse area then higher speed was allowed, and when outside the factory the fork could reach top speed. It had to do with strips in the concrete at entrances to zones and a computer on the fork that read the strips - very interesting if converted to towns, cities, highways, CBD's.

I was also watching a documentary a while ago where a prototype Volvo (owned by Ford) (in Europe) have special keys for it's cars, each key is programed to only allow the driver of the car to reach a certian top end speed. In the doco, a son was given a key to the car that only allowed him to go 80k's and he wasn't happy.
