Interesting story on the prices of the HSV GSTR W1. It shows the market is cooling. Its probably a good to time to buy if you want to invest in one.
https://www.drive.com.au/news/rare-h...00-at-auction/ On the FG Utes I am seeing LPG FGII with trays and 200K+ Km advertised easily over $20K . To me that's allot for a car that has been used as a commercial purposes. The market for FG Turbo Utes used for non commercial purposes and in very good condition is a different story. What probably affects FG commercial ute prices is cars like the new Ranger. A base Ranger probably cost at least mid $40k+. Last edited by Swordie; 13-01-2024 at 10:43 AM. |

The only other vehicle comparable to drug money value from when it was new is the 2001-2006 F250/F350, those things with 300,000km+ on the clock change hands for their new values and above. As far as a tray/tub 2WD ute goes its the best vehicle for the job on the second hand market, something with a 1 tonne payload. |

What’s a “Facebook price” range for 2015 SV6 Storm auto (sedan), white, in pretty good unmodified condition? Just curious.

Well done, that sounds like a beauty. Let us know how it goes. Quote:
Locally, saw my first modern Ranger (I don't know the exact model prefixes for them) in the mid teens, never seen a Ranger at that level, 2.0 diesel or 3.2 diesel I can't remember... Is this becoming normal or are they still stratosphere prices everywhere else?

Early Gen4 Subaru Liberty GTs (the 2.0T ones) are going cheap these days. Seen a couple of stock ones <200,000km around 5k recently. Less troublesome than the later 2.5T

Out of curiosity I usually watch a handful of cars in Grays auctions each week, and I notice that for certain models there is a noticeable difference in what they sell for in NSW and Vic versus what they sell for in SA (SA being quite higher, not WA higher, but still higher).
Keep toying with the idea of taking an arbitrage punt one day if I can get one at a decent price, fly over for a weekend and watch some interstate footy, then driving it back (to save on transport costs)...see if I can do better than break even with it back in SA. Not as a serious money making venture; just something to occupy me for a while, and if I come out of it with any beer money at the end then all good, but if all I end up with is catching an AFL game interstate and a road-trip then that's good enough. I've noticed recently that a lot of cars that sell are being re-listed one to two weeks later. These are cars that 'properly' sold (sold above reserve), not cars that were 'referred'. What would be likely reasons for that? I didn't think the buyer could pull out of the deal after the auction if they rock up and find the car is not as described? Wonder if at times the 'buyer' is actually the current owner trying to drive the price up, and they go too far trying to find the other party's highest price and end up winning their own auction? Just curious if any knows common reasons why someone might bail, as when I see a car come up a second time it makes me worry the person that won it the first time ended up rejecting it due to issues rather than finance. We're talking cars in the $3k-$10k bracket, not spending hundreds on vehicle inspection, just taking the punt and buying off photos and description. |

90% of cars I see at auction look amazing in the photos but are munted in real life.
Owners know their enthusiast car wont sell for much privately because of issues, so send them to the auctions where all issues are hidden.

$25.00 for 1 gram of weed heads?
Now apply the maths to the weight of car in kgs converted to grams x $25.00 per gram?

I knew I would be called out on the price, I just threw a figure out to extrapolate the calculation of "drug money." Years ago I was in Darwin, and defending a guy on drugs charges. Part of the tendered evidence, including scales, was a NT Police document with a list of drugs and the market prices in grams, ounces and kgs. The Magistrate ( a leftie from ACT) almost choked and was not very impressed and thought teh NT police were up to no good

It's interesting to reflect on 'value'. As different to 'price'. Price can be traded; value is sought. What is deemed to be value will be subjective, and change over time even within an individual.
Stuff I like (or like the idea of) that I reckon is value at present: some of the Jag XEs, the F-Pace is getting there. Late model Territories. Will 'price' go down further after I buy one? You betcha. Common garden variety I like and see not quite being as good value might include the VF Calais at present. Maybe also some 2000s FPVs - will price go down after I buy one? Yep, but sometime after this it should begin appreciating in price, like my ED did. Was there value in owning this one through it's final bit down in the depreciation curve during the GFC, yep! It was so much fun... New car market I'm finding very difficult to see 'value' given what I would pay for new. All time winner new purchase would have had to be the $12K Astra when Holden were going bust. Or any of the last Aussie performance, what was a FGX Sprint? 55K retail? Must be getting older, I can see the value in not purchasing a toy or runaround, in the idea that there's less moving parts to be responsible for and the opportunity cost and what the $ could otherwise do.

Well I still think its cooling off, yes top spec models will always be able to carry a premium but generally speaking I am seeing 20% or so.....as tempting as it is to jump into something else I will wait until 3/4 through the year to see what is happening.

once things mechanicalk start going wrong, one part affects another and the price of replacement parts goes skywards very quickly.

Those S-Types drove well by all accounts, they shared rear suspension similarities with the AU Falcon IRS. The Type R were quite the sleeper.

I haven't done any research but would prices be way softer on manual cars?
Just thinking there might be less demand to purchase a Manual and there are still a lot of manual cars out there, esp 10+ year old cars. Not talking high end cars, but traditionally these sort of cars were picked up as 1st cars for learner drivers, who now do not learn manual so would not be interested in them. Maybe there might be some good project cars to pick up if you look for a manual. I could be wrong, it could go the other way as well, as if there are no new cars in manual that could increase demand on manual 2nd hand cars.

Yep, XR6 Sprint was $54990 + ORC (RRP). I remember it because I tried to buy one but couldn't get one without paying huge over's to those *** hats who bought them only to flip... At that time I couldn't afford the flippers demands so missed out. Would still like to add one to my garage to go with my Final Year SSV Redline. I still look from time to time.. Cheapest one around is $50k for a white one with 95k km on it but other than that its still drug money... One day I hope...lol...
